7 Things to Know about the “Sheldon Adelson” Stadium
1.) The proposed stadium would be built on a plot of land that UNLV already owns which is located on Tropicana, just north of McCarran Airport and between the Thomas & Mack Center and the MGM Grand on the Strip.
2.) Despite claims from some detractors, UNLV SUPPORTS building a stadium on/near campus to replace the Sam Boyd stadium located on the far eastern side of the valley.3.) The potential of luring the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas with the new stadium is merely a potential side benefit. The stadium would be utilized fully for a variety of other major events with or without an NFL football team.4.) Recent news reports suggested that some 2/3 of the money to build the stadium would come from public financing, a.k.a., taxes. But that’s just an early projection. The public portion will likely be far less when the plans are completed.5.) Adelson is NOT proposing a new tax or a hike in existing taxes to pay for the public portion. Instead, he’s proposing that existing tax revenue coming from the hotel room tax on tourists be re-directed towards building the stadium rather than expanding the Las Vegas Convention Center.6.) There is no great need or demand for additional convention space in Las Vegas that privately-owned resorts cannot fill or build themselves.7.) If you argue that no public money should go towards building a stadium, that’s a legitimate point. But that same argument should then also apply to building convention facilities. In that case, we should eliminate the public funding for the Las Vegas Convention Center and reduce the room tax on our tourists.
Cheers.
