SERMON - SYMBOLS OF THE BOOK OF REVELATION

SYMBOLS
OF THE
BOOK OF
REVELATION
 
This has been prepared in lieu of a sermon written in prose format. It is intended to be used as a guide for any that wish to read and understand the Book of Revelation. There are other Books contained in God’s Word, our Bible, which may be correctly read utilizing these symbolic interpretations.
 
It is through prayer, guidance provided by the Holy Spirit and research of the words of true Christians that I was able to compile this work.
 
May God bless you as you read and sturdy His Word.
 
 
A
 
Angel – An agent of God. A messenger of either God or Satan.
 
Altar – A sacred place where prayers are offered. May be also a place for idol worship.
 
Anti-Christ – Men against Christ. The spirit if hatred of anything Christ like or Christian.
 
Ark – The chest that contained the law of God. A  place of  refuge.
 
Armageddon – Spiritual conflict of ecclesiastical  powers between the Kingdom of God                 
and false religion. The final conflict between righteousness and evil.
 
Armies – Forces resolved on subduing. They may be literal or spiritual.
 
Arrow – Darts of the enemy. Deceitful tongue.
 
Ate – Receiving God’s Word in one’s mind or heart.
 
B
 
Babylon -  The papal church as the mother of Protestantism. The apostate church on earth. Rome or Protestantism.
 
Balance scales – Scarcity. Distribution of authority either literally or spiritually.
 
Barley – The opinions of man set forth as doctrine. Doctrines that are actually an apostasy. A measure of wheat represents Papalism while 2 measures of barley represent Protestantism.
 
Beast – (several meanings) A religious kingdom on earth established by men. A group of believers under a common leader. Living creatures. May be an  evil anti- Christ group. Satan (in some instances).
 
Beasts and 24 Elders – Redeemed of all ages.
 
Beasts – Great Red Dragon: Pagan Roman Empire; With 7 Heads and 10 Horns: Papal Rome; Coming out of the earth: Protestantism; Scarlet covered (cape/robe): World Council of Churches.
 
Binding and loosing – Prohibiting (binding). Permitting. (loosing).
 
Black – Apostasy. Affliction, distress, dismay, obscure, hidden or concealed.
 
Black (as sackcloth) – Severe judgment, mourning.
 
Blood – War, carnage, slaughter. To turn water to blood is to embroil nations. A race. To subjugate nations.
 
Bottomless Pit – Earth, earthly position without Biblical foundation.
 
Bow – New covenant. Weapon of war to shoot arrows.
 
Bow and Arrow – Weapons of spiritual warfare. Calamity or disease.
 
Borne on Eagle’s Wings – God’s protection and deliverance. Deliverance from Egypt .
 
Brass – A strong kingdom  The Grecian kingdom. Great strength and hardiness.
 
Bread – The Word of God. True doctrine vs false doctrine.
 
Bride – God’s children. True Christians. The church of the Living God.
 
Brimstone – Perpetual torment. Punishment. The judgment of God.
 
C
 
Calf – Living creatures. May be martyrs.
 
Candlestick – God’s children on earth. Loyal and true Christians.
 
Chain – Word of God. (Bible) Sovereignty or captivity.
 
City – a church in her aggregate whether true or false.
 
Cloud – A large number of people either witnessing or gathered to conquer. Armies covering a country.
 
Crown – Victory, dignity, honor, a group of followers.
 
Cross – Painful; mortifying. The sufferings of Christ.   
 
D
 
Darkness – Ignorance; spiritual blindness. Affliction; gloom; sorrow.
 
Day – Joy; peace of mind. Measure of time. One year. Halftime 6 months
 
Door – A method of entrance. Access to future things. A way to discover things previously hidden or closed to man.
 
Dragon -  (Red) Heathen or pagan Rome . 7 heads are forms of government and 10 horns are kings or kingdoms. Tail of the Dragon is Protestantism lashing out against papal teachings.
 
Drunken – Intoxicated with false doctrines, worldly pleasures, influence. Under the power of superstition or idolatry. Taking in of too many false teachings of Babylon . 
 
E
 
Eagle – A masterly and orderly kingdom. Swiftness with which the early church (Christian) conquered unbelief.
 
Earthquake – Quaking of things under the power of God. Spiritual awakening. Convulsions of human society. Moral shaking.
 
Egypt – Bondage; sinful; overly wealthy; any city or religion rejecting Christ as the Head of church.
 
Euphrates – Place where Babylon was located. River of false doctrines particularly espoused by the papacy.
 
Eyes- Intelligence’ knowledge and skill. The Holy Spirit.  To search for the truth of God’s Word.
 
Face of  a man – Undying intelligence; intellectual in nature. The church.
 
False Prophet – Protestantism. Any teachings that impose doctrines not set forth by God.
 
Fan – Christ’s ministry.
 
Fire – God’s Word or Spirit. The Fire of the Holy Spirit accompanies the preaching of God’s Word as supreme.
 
Five Months – 150 years of fallen Protestantism.  An era of sectism.
 
Foot – Holy Spirit; Gospel. The power to tread upon.
 
Flesh – Doctrines of either God or the false doctrines of man. To ‘eat the flesh’ is to use the spoils of war as one’s own. To succumb to sins of the flesh is to succumb to carnal desires; sinfulness.
 
Forehead – To have God’s teachings in one’s mind. A public confession of faith. To have either false teaching accepted as true. In the hand, is to have fellowship with sectarian teaching of false doctrines.
 
Fornication – Church joining of false religions. Accepting tha imaginations of man over God’s Word on matters of faith.
 
Fountain and Rivers -  Experiences of salvation. Fonts of true teaching of the Holy Spirit. 
 
Fowl – 1. Advocates of God’s Word as revealed by the Holy Spirit. 2. Anti-Christian powers; bad spirits. 3. Unclean and hateful birds.
 
Frogs – Spirits of Satan. Evil ones.
 
G
 
Garments – Spiritual condition, white representing purity. Scarlet means sinful.
 
Gentiles – Those who worship idols.
 
Gold Lampstands – God’s churches in Asia . Seven time periods.   
 
Grapes – Fruitage, wild rebellious people. Clusters of: nations.
 
Grave – Spiritual death.
 
Great Chain – Binding by the Holy Spirit.
 
Great City – Babylon
 
Green Grass -  The flesh of Christians that was burned by pagan persecutors. Dry grass refers to the wicked.
 
H
 
Hail – God’s Word as solid truth. God’s judgment if accompanied by thunder and lightning.
 
Harlots – Daughters of an apostate mother. Churches posing as true Christian churches that are not.
 
Harvest – People ready for salvation; the judgments of God.
 
Heads, Seven, on The Dragon and the Beast – Forms of government Papal Rome.
 
Heaven – The church with full salvation in contrast to a church with political powers.
 
Hidden Manna – The Word of God.
 
Holy City – The church of God on earth.
 
Holy Jerusalem – God’s true church.
 
Horns – Power to protect.
 
Horses – Warfare bearing those fighting either for or against God .White: Holy Spirit, Christianity; Red: unbelief; Black: Apostasy; Pale: Papal Rome, camouflaged to appear as Christianity.
 
Horsemen – Those engaged in carrying our the prevailing spirit of the people.
 
I
 
Incense – Prayer; worship; preparation to teach God’s Word. Pure love for God.
 
Islands – Creeds of man representing false religion (s). Places of refuge for false teachings.
 
J
 
Jerusalem – God’s true church.
 
K
Keys – The Word of God; Knowledge; the power to bring Light. Keys of the Kingdom are the Gospels.
 
L
 
Lamb – Jesus Christ.
 
Light – Jesus Christ. Knowledge, wisdom, glory.
 
Lightning – Light on God’s Word by 6 the power of the Holy Spirit. When accompanied by thunder and hail, God’s judgment.
 
Like Gold -  An impostor. Similar in appearance but not real.
 
Linen – Spiritual clothing; purity. Moral righteousness.
 
Lion – 1. A symbol of Christ Lion of Judah ). 2. A symbol of Babylon .
 
Locusts – False ministry; false doctrine 
 
M
 
Manna – The Word of God.
 
Merchants – The ministers of the papal church. Those who deal in false doctrines.
 
Moon – Old Testament, Old covenant.
 
Morning Star –  Jesus Christ; Minister teaching God’s Word as true.
 
Mountains – Places of worship of either false or true Christianity.
 
O
 
Odors – Prayers of God’s people that have ascended. Adoration of God.
 
Oil – Both a symbol of the Holy Spirit and a symbol of abundance.
 
Olive Trees – The Word and the Spirit.
 
P
 
Pure River of Life – Salvation through Jesus Christ. Eternal life; free from moral defilement; guiltless; innocent.
 
Plague – Severe vexation from truth poured out.
 
R
 
Rain – God’s Word that refreshes and brings peace.
 
Rainbow – That which brings peace and unity.
 
Reap – Receive final reward; the end of earth as we know it.
 
Red Dragon – Symbol of Roman Empire .
 
Reed – The Bible is the golden reed. The Word of God.
 
Resurrection – Spiritual rebirth.
 
Rivers – Multitudes of people. Fountains of waters: People.
 
S
 
Sackcloth – Mourning over the loss of something desirable or of great value.
 
Scarlet – Tyranny, cruelty and the shedding of blood in unholy war. A symbol of the Papal church. Scarlet cloak: World Council of Churches. Persecution of true Christians.
 
Scroll – Either Old Testament or New Testament or both.
 
Sea – People.
 
Sea of Glass – God’s Holy Word
 
Seat – Power and authority. The center of power.
 
Seal – To impress indelibly with truth.
 
Seven Candlesticks – The 7 churches if the 7 ages.
 
Seven Heads of The Dragon - !. Regal Power; 2. Consular;3. Decemvirate; 4. Military Tribune; 5. Triumvirate; 6. Imperial; and 7. Patrician.
 
Seven Horns – 1. Anglo Saxon; 2.Burgundian; 3. Franks; 4. Huns; 5. Heruli; 6.Lombards; 7. Ostrogoths; 8. Sueves; 9. Vandals, and 10. Visigoths.
 
Seven Seals – Seven periods of time through the Gospel Day.
 
Seven Vials – Judgment against false, UN-scriptural, doctrine.    
 
Ships – Ministers, either true Christian or false in teachings. Shipwrecks: Churches that have departed from God’s Word.
 
Sickle – The reaping of souls. Also, the Bible translated into a living language.
 
Smoke – Glory or false glory. Also, a symbol of the adoration of the heart in true Christian prayer.
 
Spirits – Immortal beings; undying intelligence;  imperishable attributes.
 
Stars – Ministers, messengers, either good or bad.  A Fallen Star is a fallen ministry.
 
Sun – New Testament, new covenant.
 
Supper – Feeding the entire world on the Bread of Life.
 
Sweet/Sweetness – The experiencing of salvation.
 
Sword – The Word of God. Rome waged war with God with literal weapons while Jesus Christ and His people used the Word of God and overcame.
 
T
 
Tabernacle – The true Church.
 
Tail – Protestantism is the tail of the dragon. The last of something.
 
Teeth – The power of government. Cruelty.
 
Thunder – The voice of God. Understanding of past happenings.
 
Travailing – Deep soul burden.
 
Trees – People. Tree of Life: Jesus Christ.
 
Trumpet – Voice of a prophet, minister or angel speaking the true Word of God.
 
Two Olive Trees – The Word and Spirit if God.
 
Two Witnesses – The Word and Spirit of God.
 
V
 
Vine – Jesus Christ is the true vine.
 
Vine of The Earth – Represents the Pope. Man made religion.
 
Voice – Any means by which God makes His will known to man.
 
W
 
Waters – People; nations; tongues; multitudes.
 
Wheat – Children of God.
 
Wheel – The moving of congregations moving in the same way. Jesus Christ is the hub of a true wheel.
 
White Cloud – A multitude of pure and innocent people.
 
Whore – A church that has forsaken Christ. The papal church and her apostate daughters, Protestantism.
 
Wife – God’s true children.
 
Winds – Spirits that move men to war.
 
Wine – False doctrines.
 
Wings – God’s protection. A means of soaring to gain closeness to God.
 
Wilderness – A place of obscurity. Papal darkness. AD 270 until AD 1530.
 
Witnesses – The Word and Spirit of God.
 
Woman – Symbol meaning a church, either good or bad.
 
Wormwood – Bitterness.               

(Closing prayer)
 
Almighty God, King of the Universe, please accept our praise and our worship. You are the POWER and You alone are deserving of our prayers.
 
Father, we seek Your Divine guidance as we study You Word. We ask that You send Your Holy Spirit to us to light our paths and allow us to understand Your mighty works.
 
We ask these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, who is one with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever,
 
Amen, amen and amen.
