Security intensified as July 4th weekend nears
Gregg Zoroya, USA TODAY
Federal and local authorities are stepping up security over the Fourth of July following a bulletin by the Department of Homeland Security and FBI regarding ongoing attack threats by the Islamic State and other homegrown extremists. In Washington, D.C., where tens of thousands crowd the National Mall to watch one of the largest firework displays in the country, specially designated police patrols will keep an eye on potential targets such as landmarks, financial institutions, houses of worship, hotels and theaters, police said. The bulletin issued to police department by the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI is similar to those frequently sent out in advance of major U.S. holidays as a precaution. [...]

California governor signs strict law requiring vaccinations for most kids
Liz Szabo, USA TODAY
The governor of California – ground zero for the Disneyland measles outbreak that infected 117 people – today signed legislation giving California one of the toughest school vaccine laws in the country. California children will no longer be able to skip the shots normally required to attend school because of their parents' religious or personal objections. Unvaccinated children will still be able to attend school if there is a medical reason why they're not able to be immunized, such as treatment for cancer. "The science is clear that vaccines dramatically protect children against a number of infectious and dangerous diseases," said Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, in a statement. "While it's true that no medical intervention is without risk, the evidence shows that immunization powerfully benefits and protects the community." While all 50 states require school children to be vaccinated, 48 currently allow exemptions for families with religious objections and 20 exempt children based on parents' personal beliefs, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Twelve states this year considered legislation addressing vaccine exemptions. In May, Vermont became the first state to repeal its personal belief exemption, although the law still permits exemptions for religious reasons. [...]

Obama signs bills to facilitate TPP
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama on Monday signed into law two hard-fought bills giving him greater authority to negotiate international trade deals and providing aid to workers whose jobs are displaced by such pacts. The measures were politically linked to secure bipartisan support for the trade legislation, and they set the stage for the Obama administration to conclude negotiations on a 12-nation Pacific Rim economic pact. “I thought I’d start off the week with something we should do more often, a truly bipartisan bill signing,” Obama said in a crowded East Room ceremony. Five Democratic and two Republican members of Congress watched as Obama affixed his name to the two bills. The trade bill gives Congress the right to approve or reject trade agreements, but not change or delay them. Obama defied the wishes of most members of his Democratic Party and frayed relations with organized labor to push the legislation. The worker assistance was part of a broader trade preferences bill that extends a measure easing trade between the United States and sub-Saharan Africa. “I think it’s fair to say that getting these bills through Congress has not been easy,” Obama said. “They’ve been declared dead more than once. They have inspired long and passionate debates and that’s entirely appropriate for our democracy.” [...]

Obama signs trade, worker assistance bills into law

Obama Signs 2 Trade Bills Into Law
WASHINGTON - U.S. President Barack Obama has signed into law two hard-won bills giving him greater authority to regulate international trade deals and providing aid to workers whose jobs are displaced by such pacts. Obama signed the measures during a ceremony Monday at the White House, where he hailed the bipartisan cooperation that was needed to get the legislation through Congress. An intense lobbying campaign pitted the president against congressional Democrats and created a rare alliance with Republicans. [...]

And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.
Zechariah 14:9 KJV
Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee. Divers weights are an abomination
unto the Lord; and a false balance is not good. Man's goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?
It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry. A wise king scattereth the wicked,
and bringeth the wheel over them. The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy. (Proverbs 20:22-28)

Kim Hjelmgaard, USA TODAY
The U.S. stock market suffered its worst drop in two years Monday amid a global selloff after Greece closed its banks and imposed restrictions on cash withdrawals to try to prevent a deepening financial crisis from worsening amid faltering bailout talks with its international creditors. President Obama revealed late Monday afternoon he has spoken with French leader Francois Hollande over the crisis. "The two leaders agreed on the importance of restarting work to reach agreement on a package of reforms and financing that will allow Greece to return to growth and debt sustainability within the Eurozone," according to a White House statement. w embedded vid Greece's debt drama: What you need to know
Kim Hjelmgaard, USA TODAY
European leaders have given Greece, and themselves, a Saturday deadline to reach a deal with Athens over loan repayments. After a week of intense negotiations, the two sides have failed to come up with a mutually acceptable plan that would allow Greece to pay the International Monetary Fund debts worth $1.8 billion by June 30. Without a deal, Greece may be forced out of the eurozone, an economic and currency collective comprised of 19 nations. It may also, as a result of that exit, lose its membership of the larger, 28-nation European Union political bloc. "European history is full of disagreements, negotiations and at the end, compromises," Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said after the talks ended with out an agreement in Brussels on Thursday. "So, after the comprehensive Greek proposals, I am confident we will reach a compromise," he said. Analysts, commentators and officials on both sides are less certain a deal can be achieved in time. Nikolia Apostolou and Thodoris Skoulis, Special for USA TODAY
ATHENS — At Taverna Plaka restaurant, waiter Gamal Takaway stands among rows of tables left empty because of government limits on cash withdrawals this week as Greece hunkers down during a financial crisis. Near the Acropolis, cash that is limited for Greeks but plentiful for foreign travelers created two tiers of customers -- those who can stop at Elaea Cafe for coffee and sweets and those who can't. "There is a lot of anxiety," said owner Yannis Iliopoulos. And fishmonger Spyros Corakkis said selling the day's catch from the shimmering Aegean Sea is much tougher at hotels and restaurants on a cash-only basis without invoices. "It's a big problem when the banks are closed," Corakkis said. "It's much more difficult." Greece's banks closed this week as the country negotiates debt payments with the rest of Europe. One miserly result is a withdrawal limit of 60 euros per day or about $67. Tens of thousands of retirees who were scheduled to receive pensions Monday hadn't had money credited to their accounts. Some money trickled in Tuesday afternoon, according to Greek media reports. [...]

w embedded vid Greece asks for new bailout — its third — at 11th hour
Kim Hjelmgaard, USA TODAY
Greece requested a third bailout from the eurozone Tuesday in a last-ditch effort to secure a debt deal before its financial-crisis-era bailout expires and it defaults on a loan from the International Monetary Fund, one of its three international creditors. The two-year deal, if accepted, would allow Athens a new bailout from the eurozone's European Stability Mechanism, its $560 billion rescue fund. [...]

Obama: Greece's problems are a 'substantial concern'
David Jackson, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — President Obama said Tuesday that Greece's financial problems are a "substantial concern" that would create more economic problems for Europe than the United States. While a Greek default would not generate a "major shock" to the U.S. financial system, Obama told reporters at the White House, it would slow economic growth in Europe. [...]

Greece tourism unaffected by financial crisis
Tyler Pager, USA TODAY
Despite Greece's extreme financial crisis, the country's lucrative tourism industry appears to be uninterrupted. And that's good news for Greeks. Tourism brought in around $32.7 billion in 2014, which made up more than 17% of the country's GDP. The industry also contributed to 9.4% of total employment, or 340,500 jobs, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council. [...]
