SILVER STATE CONFIDENTIAL 05/26/2015

BALTIMORE’S MEMORIAL DAY SHOOTING GALLERY

Despite the Freddy Gray rioting and protests ending two weeks ago, Baltimore celebrated this past Memorial Day weekend with 29 people getting shot, 9 of whom were killed.

Apparently black lives don’t matter when it’s young black men shooting other blacks, including innocent women and children.  Black lives apparently only matter when a cop shoots a black criminal trying to run away or resist arrest.

But I’m sure somehow this weekend’s carnage must have been the cops’ fault, right?

UPDATE ON CAMPUS CARRY FUSTER-CLUCK

If it’s humanly possible for Republicans to screw up campus carry any worse than Assembly Republicans already have this session, Assembly Republicans are the ones to do it.

If you missed Monday morning’s extremely tense and terse teleconference - hosted by Citizen Outreach and moderated by yours truly - featuring Assemblywoman Michele Fiore and Assemblyman Jim Wheeler, I now have the audio posted on my Muth’s Truths blog.

In addition, I was able to obtain a transcript of Fiore’s “fioreous” and explosive radio interview last Friday morning - the day after her campus carry amendment was killed by the Not-So-Great-Eight - with conservative talk-show host Alan Stock.

To give you an idea of how the conversation went, here’s the opening quote by Fiore after Stock asked, “How are you doing?”

“You know, after the pathetic pompous ass performance by
Speaker John Hambrick yesterday, I am surviving and I’ll tell you
what, after the session I hope some of these folks don’t think about
re-running because John Hambrick besides – well first of all,
Assemblyman Jim Wheeler killed ‘campus carry’ yesterday,
Assemblyman Wheeler, cowboys on the north, empty hat, okay. That
is a bad term for a cowboy, empty hat. Killed ‘campus carry’
along with Assembly James Oscarson from Nye County, that guy
is no Ed Goedhart. I will not feel bad whoever primaries him. I’ll
probably donate to their campaign. Chris Edwards of course, wire
boy, joined in with that. Paul Anderson, majority leader Paul
Anderson, Derek Armstrong, Mr. Tax Man, Lynn Stewart,
Assemblywoman Melissa Woodbury and new freshman guy
Steven Silberkraus. Very disappointed in those eight.”

And then after warming up, Fiore let folks know how she REALLY felt!

To read the full transcript of the interview…

And for the record, I’m not questioning Mr. Wheeler’s support for the campus carry issue; I’m questioning his judgment.

He went “rogue” and divided our forces at a critical time in the battle.

He decided he knew better than the vast majority of his GOP colleagues, including Assembly Judiciary Committee Chairman Ira Hansen who was guiding the effort all along.

If campus carry ultimately does die this session – including passing a “campus carry” bill that doesn’t include campus carry – it’ll be Wheeler’s loss to bear.

RALSTON GETS ONE RIGHT

Jon Ralston, Nevada’s #2 liberal blogger-with-a-taxpayer-subsidized-TV-show, isn’t correct very often.  But even a broken clock gets it right twice a day.

And Ralston, joined by my friend and Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Steve Sebelius, is absolutely correct in saying that Republicans who vote for budget increases but then vote against the tax hikes necessary to fund the higher spending would be hypocrites.

a

They would indeed.

The only fiscally responsible thing to do is vote on Gov. Brian Sandoval’s proposed tax hikes FIRST (and hopefully kill them) and THEN vote for the budget after knowing how much of an allowance they have to spend – just like you and I do with our own family budgets.

PRIMARY VS. CAUCUS

Here are some observations about the efforts by establishment Republicans to change Nevada from a presidential caucus state to a primary state…

(a)  This shifts the cost of nominating a presidential candidate from the major political parties to the taxpayers of Nevada.

(b)  Switching from a caucus to a primary will likely hurt Nevada’s efforts to remain one of the first four states in the presidential selection process in the future.

(c)  In the end it probably won’t mean a hill of beans.  We got one of the Top 4 slots only because Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wanted it.  After he’s gone…so will our “juice” to remain in the Top 4.

(d)  Switching from a caucus to a primary helps wishy-washy moderate establishment candidates with a lot of money and hurts conservative underdogs with a lot of grassroots support but little dough.

(e)  A primary means the party’s nominee will be chosen by more low-information voters than involved grassroots activists.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ THE BILLS

I found out why Assemblyman Brent Jones (R-Las Vegas) ended up being the only Republican in the Assembly to vote against SB240, the gun bill that Assembly Judiciary Chairman Ira Hansen rolled the “blue card” repeal into to protect it from the silly gamesmanship being played over the campus carry issue.

As it turns out, not only did they amend “blue card” repeal into SB240, but they also included another amendment in Section 19 that essentially would allow non-doctor health care workers to have you committed to a mental health facility, including government social workers, nurses, marriage counselors and  family therapists.

This was an issue Assemblyman Jones has been fighting against all session, and when he found out that they’d sneaked it into SB240, he voted against the entire bill.

BRAVO to a legislator who actually READS THE BILLS!

RINO WATCH

Folks, I have a special favor to ask of you…

You remember how much Assemblyman Randy “Kirner Tax” Kirner (R-Kirner Tax) hates being referred to as the Father of the Kirner Tax?

Well, Assemblyman Pat “The Appeaser” Hickey (Reno-RINO) hates being called a RINO (Republican in Name Only) every bit as much as Mr. Kirner Tax hates being referred to as Mr. Kirner Tax.

In response to RINO Hickey’s latest blog post, in which he maintains it takes courage to raise taxes, Tom Nimsic of Washoe Valley sent RINO Hickey an email which included this closing sentence…

“Democrats are now irrelevant as they are caught between you RINOs and Republicans.  Now, you RINOs have not just taken their place, but moved to their left!”

To which RINO Hickey responded…

“Tom--I will accept your criticism of my views and legislative policies. I will agree to disagree. What I don't appreciate is for you to continually call those who you disagree with to be ‘RINO's’  You, like myself, are one member of the Republican Party. You or I , cannot define to others what the meaning of a Republican is. To use your logic, we next should be calling one another—‘AINO's’ (or Americans in Name Only).”

There is, indeed, an “A”-word that I think aptly applies to RINO Hickey, but it ain’t AINO…no matter how cute RINO Hickey finds that acronym.

In any event, it’s clear that RINO Hickey really, really, really hates being called a RINO, no matter the fact that if the shoe fits…

So, please, please, PLEASE…when communicating with RINO Hickey (pat.hickey@asm.state.nv.us), whatever you do, don’t call this RINO a RINO.
