Conservative Coalition Leaders Demand Answers in Tainted Mississippi GOP Runoff
A
coalition of eight conservative grassroots leaders wants Republican
National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus to launch an internal
investigation into questionable activities surrounding the June 24
runoff election for the Republican Senate nomination in Mississippi,
which pitted incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran against state Sen. Chris
McDaniel.
In a letter sent to Priebus Monday,
the conservative signatories note an array of potentially illegal
activities and express “outrage” over the campaign activities of RNC
Member Henry Barbour, who directed the activities of a political action
committee that was involved in the runoff and supported Cochran’s
reelection. Among the actions the coalition wants investigated are
racially incendiary campaign ads and literature, allegations of illegal
vote buying, inciting illegal voting by Democrats in a Republican
primary, campaign finance irregularities and violations of the RNC’s own
rules.
These
race-baiting robo-calls, race-baiting radio ads, race-baiting fliers,
allegations of blatant violations of Mississippi election law, improper
financial transactions, and old-fashioned ‘walking around money,’ all
paid for by the Super PAC directed by Mississippi Republican National
Committeeman Henry Barbour, amount to nothing less than the character
assassination of Sen. McDaniel and his supporters. It cannot be
tolerated,” said the coalition leaders in their letter to Priebus.
Along
with an investigation of suspicious activities in the runoff, the
coalition members want Priebus to speak out against the campaign tactics
deployed in support of Cochran. “If you do not take the minimum steps
necessary to investigate these dishonest activities, disavow this
conduct and issue a formal censure or take other disciplinary action
against those persons responsible, we will be left to conclude that you
support the disregarding of RNC rules and the race-baiting smears
directed at Sen. McDaniel and his supporters,” reads the letter to
Priebus.
The
coalition members include Jenny Beth Martin of Tea Party Patriots
Citizens Fund; Brent Bozell of ForAmerica; former RNC Director of
Grassroots Drew Ryun; Matt Kibbe of Freedom Works; Ken Blackwell of the
American Civil Rights Union; Colin Hanna of Let Freedom Ring; Richard
Viguerie of ConservativeHQ.com; and Tony Perkins of the FRC Action PAC.
