MOUNT REAGAN MOVES ANOTHER
STEP FORWARD
Steve
Tetreault of the Las Vegas Review-Journal
tweeted this morning that the full House Natural Resources Committee approved
Rep. Joe Heck’s bill naming a peak
on Frenchman Mountain on the east side of Las Vegas after President Reagan.
Yesterday
there was talk of amending the bill to add in Rep. Dina Titus’ proposal to name another peak on Frenchman Mountain
after a 1950s Nevada state legislator, but Tetreault reports that no such deal
moved forward after Democrats today insultingly proposed renaming Yucca
Mountain after President Reagan instead.
The
Associated Press reports
on another tongue-in-cheek proposal by Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif, to name the
entire planet after Reagan, leading committee Chairman Doc Hastings to respond, "If the gentleman would introduce
legislation, I would guarantee that he'll have a hearing on that bill.”
As for
the compromise discussions, Tetreault noted it yesterday in a separate story in
which both Rep. Heck and I expressed no objection to amending the bill and approving
both naming proposals. But I have to
admit to being amazed at Rep. Titus’ comments about the possible deal.
“Titus
said one thing was for certain,” Tetreault reported. “There is too much discussion about naming
mountaintops when the House has a full plate.”
You
have got to be kidding me!
The fact
is the naming proposal for “Mount Reagan” was going through the proper
channels and approval process as established by Congress via the Board on
Geographic Names when Titus herself stopped the administrative process by
introducing her bill last October to name the same mountain peak we had identified
for “Mount Reagan” after another person.
So the
ONLY reason this proposal is before Congress today is because Rep. Titus
chose to put it there!
In
any event, Mount Reagan has cleared another hurdle and moved another step
forward.
The
bill next will go to the full House of Representatives for approval…hopefully
before the 10th anniversary of the President’s death on June 4th.
If
approved in the House, it would still have to be approved by Sen. Harry Reid’s U.S. Senate and signed by
President Obama. So we still have a long
way to go.
MISS MINNEAPOLIS COMING TO
VEGAS
Back
in January, Julia Schliesing was
crowned Miss Minneapolis and will be competing for Miss Minnesota in June. If she wins the state pageant she’ll
represent the Gopher State in the Miss America Pageant in the fall.
Here’s
the really interesting thing about Julia: She’s a self-described
libertarian-leaning conservative who has been active on the campus carry issue
at the University of Minnesota and hopes to one day run for public office.
And
she’ll be our First Friday Happy Hour VIP guest-of-honor in May!
In
the meantime, you can catch a recent Minnesota Tea Party podcast interview with
Julia by clicking
here.
You’ll
quickly find out that this is no wishy-washy shrinking violet. This is a real-deal potential rising conservative
star…and not just because she likes beer!

TAX PLEDGE SIGNERS
Amy Groves, conservative
Republican candidate in Assembly District 29, has signed the Taxpayer
Protection Pledge.
Her opponent in the
GOP primary, Stephen Silverkraut,
has not made the same promise to the voters of the district that he will oppose
and vote against any and all efforts to increase taxes.
Also,
Brent Jones, conservative Republican candidate for Assembly District 35, inked
the Pledge at last week’s First Friday Happy Hour.
“As
the party of pro-growth, low taxation, limited government and individual
liberty, I believe it is imperative that our elected officials be held
accountable to their constituents,” Jones writes in an email. “The Taxpayer Protection Pledge is a big step
in the right direction. That is why I
enthusiastically signed it!"

FAMOUS LAST WORDS
“I'm
writing this letter to respectfully ask that you please change your mind and
allow your client to debate me on several other TV and/or radio stations in the
Nevada lieutenant governor race. … I recognize Mark didn’t do so hot in the
last debate on Jon Ralston’s television program. So I understand why you would
prefer to hide him from further public scrutiny, much like the Democrats did
with Allison Copening and Shirley Breeden in 2008. However, I think Republican voters deserve
better.” – Letter from GOP lieutenant governor candidate Sue Lowden to Mike
Slanker, campaign manager for her opponent, Mark Hutchison, 4/9/14 (Hat tip:
