Leader Cantor: House Republicans Are Serious About Protecting Seniors
WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Leader
Eric Cantor today released the following statement regarding H.R. 4160,
the Keep the Promise to Seniors Act:
"House Republicans are serious about protecting seniors and
the Medicare programs that they rely on, which is why we scheduled the
Keep the Promise to Seniors Act for floor consideration today. The
Administration's proposed rule changes to Medicare Part D would have
harmed seniors and made prescription drugs more expensive for too many
who need the care. In response to today's anticipated legislative
action, CMS sent notice to Congress that they had reconsidered the rule
changes to Medicare Part D that would have harmed seniors.
"House Republicans have spent the day reviewing the letter,
and it is our opinion that the Administration's changes address most of
our major concerns. Thus we will no longer be considering H.R. 4160.
"It's unfortunate that it took the threat of bipartisan
congressional action to convince the Administration to stop its attack
on Medicare programs that work and the seniors who rely on them.
"The House will reconsider this decision if it appears the
Administration reverses course and moves ahead with rules that would
harm seniors. The Keep the Promise to Seniors Act of 2014 stands ready
if needed. I'd like to thank Representative Renee Ellmers, Chairman Dave
Camp, Chairman Fred Upton, Chairman Kevin Brady, and Chairman Joe Pitts
for their leadership in these efforts and the actions they took which
ultimately resulted in these seniors not being harmed by the
Administration's proposed Medicare changes."
