The Good.
What a wonderful couple of weeks since I last sent out an e-mail. On Saturday,
December
7, 2013 I participated in the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce Santa's
Electric Night Parade and, with the help of Alana Lee, Ellie Smith and
Camryn and Shannon Lueck as carolers, we won 2nd Place in the
Outstanding "Other" Category. I was also been busy
traveling the state and meeting great people like you. I’ve been to
Minden, Reno, Tonopah, Elko and Yerrington to meet with the people who
will elect the next Lieutenant Governor of Nevada and I can’t tell you
have warmly I was received, Thank You.
This
past week I was invited to participate in the Nevada Policy Research
Institute’s Obamacare & Business Roundtable. I was asked to
represent Nevada businesses and it was a great crowd and we we had a
lively discussion. If you would like to see one of my answers please

The Bad.
You know it can’t be good if I’m quoting the New York Times, but...
On Wednesday the New York Times
published an article comparing the sign ups for ObamaCare across the
country. Nevada was ranked 28th for the number of people who “selected” a
plan under the Silver State Exchange. This doesn’t mean they signed up
for health insurance, it just means they selected a plan. The bad news,
for Nevada taxpayers, is that we were ranked 7th for the number of
people who were processed and were eligible for Medicaid, fully 85.54%
of the people who visited the Silver State Exchange qualified for
Medicaid.
According to an article in the Las Vegas - Review
Journal Barbara Smith Campbell, Chairwoman of the Silver State
Exchange, estimated only 45.87% of the final total of people in Nevada
that eventually sign up for insurance through the Silver State Exchange
were supposed to be eligible for Medicaid.
The Ugly.
This week National Review
published a story about the Navigators and Facilitators in Nevada that
highlighted a potential problem with our system that was passed in the
last Legislature. Although the bill that was passed requires a
background check of anyone before they can be hired as a Navigator or
Facilitator it does not prohibit someone with a criminal background from
being hired and having access to our confidential personal information.
Hopefully
no one has been licensed to be a Facilitator or a Navigator that will
take advantage of unsuspecting Nevadan’s. Assemblywoman Michele Fiore
was the only Legislator to vote against the bill that instituted
Nevada’s Facilitators and Navigators maybe we can prevail upon her to
fix it next Legislative Session.
Paid for and authorized by Sue Lowden for Lieutenant Governor
