Erin Bilbray-Kohn: Fundraising Fail

At what point do we stop taking the Erin Bilbray-Kohn campaign seriously?

As everyone knows, Bilbray-Kohn was a first round draft pick for what is a Top Five congressional race in the country for Democrats.  She has been fundraising actively for a year and yet chalked up a not-so-impressive fundraising total in her first FEC reporting period.

Now it appears she’s still struggling…

On December 20, the Bilbray-Kohn campaign sent out an email fundraising appeal that included the following…

We both know Joe Heck has got to go. He voted to shut down the government. He voted against a bipartisan budget deal. He’s supporting overly broad NSA measures that infringe on our Constitutional rights. It’s clear, Joe Heck does not represent Nevada’s values. Now, it’s our job to make sure that not just you and I know it, but everyone across our community knows it.

Our final FEC fundraising deadline of 2013 is just 11 days away. The team tells me we need $12,123 more in the bank before that ball drops and 2014 arrives.

Look, if Congressman Heck is really that bad and Bilbray-Kohn is really that good, raising a mere $12K should be no problem; no problem at all – even though the reason for needing such a specific amount remains totally unclear.

What exactly is the campaign’s fundraising goal for the final FEC reporting period of 2013?  They don’t say…just like they didn’t say for the third quarter.  That way, no matter what amount they report, they can claim success…even if it turns out to be a failure.

Nevertheless, here’s the sad email the Bilbray-Kohn campaign sent out yesterday, a week after the original fundraising appeal…

A few days ago, we set out to raise $12,123 to meet our end of year goal. With five days to go, we only have $10,842 left to raise. As I said earlier, hitting this end of year goal will be our first opportunity to hold Joe Heck accountable for:

• voting against a bipartisan budget deal
• voting to shutdown the government
• placing Medicare on the chopping block
• voting against a woman's right to choose

Heck puts politics first - not his constituents. Chip in $3 now to hold Joe Heck accountable for his reckless voting record.

Now, I’ve heard of putting lipstick on a pig, but this really takes the cake.

Again, according to Bilbray-Kohn, Dr. Heck is the worst thing since that serpent that convinced Eve to take a bite of the apple.  And yet…

Despite painting a rosy scenario that “we only have $10,842 left to raise,” the reality is that in the course of a week, one of the Democrats’ MVPs in a top tier race against a horribly “reckless” opponent was only able to raise…a paltry $1,281!

This, after Senate Majority Leader Harry  Reid himself sent out his own fundraising email saying he “can’t think of a better person to represent Nevada’s 3rd district than Erin” and that “she needs – and deserves – our support”?

Are you kidding me?

In the third quarter, before Bilbray-Kohn really started to actively campaign, she raised $253,000.

Personally, I think for this race for such a supposed super-star recruit, she should have at least doubled that.

But at the very least, considering all the difficulties Republicans experienced with the budget and the government shutdown in the fourth quarter, anything less than the same amount for the end-of-year reporting period would have to be construed as a major fail.

At which point, maybe it will be time to stop taking this campaign challenge so seriously?  I mean, maybe Democrats are simply acknowledging through their lack of financial support that there’s just no there there.

Of course, it’s possible that these desperate end-of-year emails are just a head fake and Bilbray-Kohn is rolling in campaign dough, as she should be under the circumstances.

We’ll know soon enough when the next FEC reports come out in a few days.  Stay tuned, Batfans...
