CITY COUNCIL OF D.C. VOTED TO 'STOP 1,800 NEW JOBS'
Walmart is in the middle of building three of their
super stores in DC with plans to build three more later. Not so
fast. The Washington DC City Council has come up with the great idea to
force Walmart to pay a minimum wage of $12.25 an hour. Surely a lot of
companies must be screaming bloody murder. No, you see the law will only
apply to Walmart.
Of course a law forcing only one company to pay the tax is illegal. It
violates the equal protection clause in the Constitution. This is where
they get creative. The only companies who will have to pay those increased
wages are those companies with over 75,000 square feet of space, whose home is
based in DC and who do not use union labor. Let’s see. Now how many
companies meet that criteria? Well, there’s Walmart………
Not to be bullied, Walmart told the city that if that minimum wage is
imposed, they will pull out of the city and with them would go the 1800 jobs the
six stores would have created. Washington better watch it. They are
no match for Walmart. Walmart has more money with none of the debt and is
run much better, too.
