of the National Conference of [ Roman ] Catholic Bishops (NCCB)
"The Supreme Court decision of January 22, 1973, overthrowing
all existing abortion laws, led
to an enormous growth in the movement. The National Right to Life
Committee which had
been founded in 1968 under the auspices of the National Conference of
Catholic Bishops,
in 1973 became autonomous and non-sectarian. It is the largest and
most influential national
organization, with well over two thousand local affiliates by the
1980s."

A Brief History of USCCB
http://www.usccb.org/about/a-brief-history-of-usccb.cfm
in "1966 ... the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB) and
the United States Catholic Conference (USCC) were established.
The NCCB would focus on Church affairs in this country, fulfilling the
Second Vatican Council's mandate that bishops "jointly exercise
their pastoral office" (Decree on the Bishops' Pastoral Office in
the Church, #38). The NCCB operated through bishops committees,
many of which had full-time staff secretariats. Alternatively, the USCC
addressed issues of the Church within society, and its committees
included bishops, clergy, religious and lay persons.
On July 1, 2001 the NCCB and the USCC were combined to form the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
