MUTH'S TRUTHS 04/24/2013

DIRTY HALF-DOZEN GANG RIDES AGAIN!

As tweeted last night by the Las Vegas Sun’s Anjeanette Damon, “Republican” Sen.“Moderate Mike” Roberson and five of his GOP colleagues will trot out a staggering $600 million mining tax hike today!

What’s even more sickening than Republicans leading the charge for this outrageous $600 million tax hike is how, as Jon Ralston calls them, the “Dirty Half-Dozen Gang” (GOP Sens. Roberson, Ben KieckheferMark Hutchison, Joe Hardy, Scott Hammondand Greg Brower) are using the liberal tactic of exploiting children as human shields to give themselves political cover.

According to Ralston Reports this morning, the Dirty Half-Dozen Gang are going to call their massive tax hike the “Education Priority Initiative” and will earmark the money for class size reduction and expanded English Language Learner programs – all of which will result in more dues-paying/Republican-hating teachers union members!

Dumb asses.

These so-called “Republicans” are making Benedict Arnold look like Audie Murphy (ask your granddad). And Roberson himself is starting to look an awful lot like Gen. Custerat Little Big Horn.

ANOTHER BIZARRE TAX HIKE VOTE

Well, here they go again.

Nutshell: Voters in Clark County agreed to a sales tax hike to hire more cops in 2004. But it was a two-part deal.  Half the money would come immediately; the other half only if re-approved by the Legislature.

Clearly the world has changed dramatically since that initial vote way back in the boom days before the recession hit.  Clearly if the voters had to vote on another sales tax hike this year they would reject it overwhelmingly – just as they did on tax hike after tax hike on the ballot last November.

And yet…

The state Assembly voted 32-9 yesterday to hike the sales tax in Clark County to 8.25 percent, the highest sales tax rate in the entire state and most of the nation.

And Gov. Brian Sandoval says he’ll sign it…yet another betrayal of his promise to the people of Nevada that he wouldn’t raise their taxes.

But wait; it gets worse…

You would think the 9 votes against this tax hike would have all come from Republicans, right?

Wrong!

Only 4 of the 15 Republicans in the Assembly voted against the tax hike: Wes Duncan, Paul Anderson, John Ellison and Jim Wheeler

Unbelievably, more Democrats voted against this tax hike than Republicans.  The five D’s who just said “NO!” were Maggie Carlton, Richard Carillo, Joe Hogan, Peggy Pierce and Ellen Spiegel.

Sadly, for the second day in a row Tax Pledge signers John Hambrick and Pete Livermore broke their promise to their constituents by voting for this tax hike.

Worse, so did Assemblywoman Michele Fiore.  (I say worse because of the shocking reason she gave me on the phone yesterday afternoon just before the vote…which I’ll explain in this afternoon’s Silver State Confidential.)

As for raising taxes to give more money to well-paid Metro cops, I think the following email message I received from one reader sums it up pretty nicely: “This is nuts.  They make a hell of a lot more money than our troops who have a way more dangerous job and don't get to sleep in a bed at night.”

Amen.

BRUSHFIRE ALERT

I know a lot of you have an interest in the proposed Parents Rights bill (SB314), and there was action on it in the Senate yesterday.  Received this update this morning:

“Last night the Nevada Senate unanimously passed SB314.  No discussion, just a vote in favor from all 11 Democrats and 10 Republicans. It was because of all of you who called, emailed and/or attended the hearing that this victory was achieved... the ParentalRights.org/NEVADA team thanks you!

“Now it's on to the Assembly... same thing, different people! More work to be done. Your calls and emails will be just as important in order to keep up the pressure!” - Frank Schnorbus, Barbara Dragon, Kelley Millard Radow, Elissa Wahl, Laura Siegel and Ray Poole

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“Internet tax bill (is) only about helping state tax collectors, not brick/mortar stores. Internet stores already have additional cost of shipping.” – Columnist Ann Coulter
