More than two-thousand years ago Herod ordered the massacre of thousands of innocent children around Bethlehem in order to protect his own selfish interests.
While that tyrant's horrifying and brutal slaughter of the most vulnerable is rightfully condemned, we are allowing something as equally sickening to go on right in our backyard.
Today that slaughter has taken on a different name.
Abortion -- and the modern-day Herod is the abortion lobby.
Much like Herod from biblical days, their agenda is to claim the lives of innocent unborn children, only on a much grander scale.
This slaughter must be stopped.
Which is why your National Pro-Life Alliance will not be easing up on Members of Congress one single iota.
With the elections over, some politicians may think that they can relax, sit back, kick up their feet for a while and that the pressure from pro-lifers will let up.
They couldn't be more wrong.
And NPLA members like you are what make this even at all possible.
I want you to know that you play a very special role in your National Pro-Life Alliance's work.
You've given me your advice, signed petitions to Congress, lobbied the candidates, and taken action on critical pro-life issues when I've asked you.
You see, despite what you may have heard in the pro-abortion media, you and I actually PICKED UP pledged support in Congress for the Life at Conception Act to overturn Roe v. Wade.
I wish I could personally visit you, shake your hand, and fill you in on everything you've made possible in the fight to save the lives of the innocent unborn.
Yet even though I can't meet you in person, I want to take this opportunity to remind you of how much you and I have accomplished and what is still at stake.
From its very beginning your NPLA has been a leader in the state and federal battles to eliminate all abortion-on-demand.
And thanks to your support throughout this past Congress, you and I were able to take on the pro-abortion national media, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Democrat Leader Nancy Pelosi, recruiting a record 159 cosponsors in the U.S. House and Senate for our Life at Conception Act.
That is a credit to your hard work and dedication this past year -- something that we pro-lifers must repeat in this new year.
The level of support you've given to the efforts of the National Pro-Life Alliance is more important than ever as we head into 2013 and beyond.
So it is absolutely vital that we redouble our efforts to stay on the offensive, fighting to protect the innocent unborn.
And one thing we know about our members' grass-roots pressure on politicians running for office:
It works!
While the fortunes of the political parties have waxed and waned with each election, support for the Life at Conception Act has grown steadily since NPLA members voted to make it their top priority ten years ago.
In the last election, in spite of what amounted to a Democrat tidal wave, NPLA-PAC and members played important roles in defeating five pro-abortion incumbents and winning new pledged Senators in Nebraska and Texas.
And in our 91 targeted House districts, pledged Life at Conception Act supporters won in 84 of them.
So thanks to your efforts, there is a lot to build on.
That's why it is so important you and I vigorously oppose the abortion lobby's agenda and force public debate on a Life at Conception Act, which would end all abortion-on-demand.
And, of course, the beauty of a Life at Conception Act is that it would use Roe v. Wade's own wording to bring it down and end abortion-on-demand by guaranteeing all persons -- including unborn children -- are protected by the Fourteenth Amendment.
The fact is, the Supreme Court itself wrote in the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that no such "right" to an abortion would exist if Congress were to establish unborn children as "persons."
The ultimate passage of this bill and ending all abortion remains the top legislative priority for your National Pro-Life Alliance.
Yet the political realities we now face require that we also focus our efforts on other battles.
With a radical pro-abortion President still in power and pro-abortion politicians in control of the U.S. Senate, they will continue to flex their political muscles.
Therefore, you and I must also go all out to:
*** Close the spigot of tax dollars to directly fund abortions in everything from foreign aid to "health care reform" legislation;
*** Make sure that the many new politicians who ran on pro-life platforms fulfill their promises;
*** Block President Obama from packing the Supreme Court and lower federal courts with activist judges who constantly invent a "right" to abortion not contained in the U.S. Constitution.
That's why I am counting on you now to make a financial contribution to the National Pro-Life Alliance. I've budgeted an ambitious $4.8 MILLION in the year 2013 for all our pro-life activities, including direct lobbying, TV, newspaper and internet ads and grass-roots mobilization.
I'm looking to new members to raise $2,100,000 of that amount. But I'll still have to raise $2,700,000 from our current members.
I've reviewed your record of support and let me say I really appreciate your commitment.
But now, I hope you will consider chipping in with a contribution to the National Pro-Life Alliance to help in our fight against abortion-on-demand.
In light of both the new threats and the new opportunities you and I currently face, I hope I can count on you to make a contribution of $50 for your membership for the year 2013.
You will have the satisfaction of knowing you are doing all you can to protect the innocent unborn and end abortion-on-demand.
But no matter how much you give, whether it is $50, $25, or even $10, I guarantee it will make a difference.
As the book of Deuteronomy reminds us, you and I have a sacred calling. "I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants."
