SILVER STATE CONFIDENTIAL 10/16/2012

DEMOCRAT TAX CUTTERS?

Democrat Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani is quoted in today’s Las Vegas Sunas saying that the sales tax rate here of 8 percent “is already too high.”

We agree.  So why not cut it?  Why not refuse to re-impose Gov. Brian Sandoval’s sales tax hike that’s supposed to expire next June?

And I couldn’t help but notice that liberal Assemblywoman Sheila Leslie recently said in a debate that we should “phase out the modified business tax, which is a job killer. And we could lower the sales tax, eventually.”

Wouldn’t it be fun to see Democrats in the Legislature oppose the Sandoval tax hikes that are supported by Republicans?  Now THAT would be bipartisanship.

TAX MY MEAT PETE SLURPS AT BLM TROUGH

Independent American state senate candidate Janine Hansen revealed in a press release on Monday that her GOP opponent, Assemblyman Pete “Tax My Meat” Goicoecheareceived $674,591 for “Wildhorse/Burro Control Services” from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) from the years 2000-03.

The release calls on Goicoechea to disclose any and all other payments he may have received, or continues to receive, from any and all government agencies

Hansen also noted that Goicoechea “sponsored a bill in the last legislative session, AB 329, that, according to an Associated Press story, he introduced because he believes the 1971 Free-Roaming Wild Horse and Burro Act means ‘the BLM should take care of’ wild horses and burros.”

So Tax My Meat Pete sponsored a bill that might have forced the BLM to provide the same kinds of services for wild horses that the BLM appears to have paid Goicoechea six-figures to provide in the past?

As Hansen notes, how can Goicoechea advocate against the BLM on behalf of his rural constituents when he’s on the BLM’s payroll?  Talk about a major conflict of interest.

Oh, and one more item that wasn’t mentioned in Hansen’s release: Goicoechea claims to have introduced AB 329 on behalf of rural cattlemen.  And guess who’s president of the Nevada Cattlemen’s Association?  JJ Goicoechea, the Assemblyman’s son.

This whole thing stinks worse than Tax My Meat Pete’s barn!

THE HORSFORD FILES

Harry to the Rescue!

Harry Reid jumped into the Tarkanian/Horsford race on Monday with a media conference call discussing that $17 million judgment over a land deal gone bad that’s hanging over Tark’s head.  This can only mean one thing: The Democrats are panicking over Horsford’s dismal, race-baiting campaign performance and needed to bring in the Great White Father to rescue him.

Ironically, when the land deal in question went south, Tarkanian’s parents – City Councilwoman Lois and former icon basketball coach Jerry – wanted to seek advice from Reid on how to deal with it; something Danny reportedly objected to, maintaining Reid would use the matter to hurt the family.  Lois and Jerry, however, “considered Reid a friend and someone they could turn to for input.”

Upon further consideration, with friends like Harry Reid…

Oh, and in case you missed it, the Las Vegas Review-Journal endorsed Tarkanian over “Bahama” Steve this morning, arguing that Tark is “the only viable candidate in this race” who is capable of fresh thinking and making tough decisions.  For more, click here

DRIVE-BY MUTHINGS

* When will President Barack Obama start talking about WINNING the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and not about ending them?  And when will Republicans start making this distinction a big deal in their campaigns?

* Attention Republicans: Get off Joe Biden’s back.  Had he been serious and professional and courteous in his debate with Paul Ryan, he’d have likely been declared the winner and the Romney momentum may have been slowed.  But thanks to Biden being his obnoxious Biden self, THAT’s what everybody is talking about instead of his experience and command of the issues.  Smilin’ Joe’s performance was a huge gift to the GOP.  Bravo!  Bravo!  Encore!

* You know what I would have loved to have seen in that veep debate though?  I’d have loved it if Ryan had turned to him and pulled a Joe Pesci (“Goodfellas”):  “You think this is funny.  I'm funny how?  I mean, funny like I'm a clown?  I amuse you?  I make you laugh? I'm here to (expletive) amuse you? What do you mean funny?  Funny how? How am I funny?”

Jay Leno took 3 minutes of his monologue Friday night to poke fun at Biden.  Click here

* Another Barack Obama taxpayer-funded business “success” story (courtesy of the Wall Street Journal this morning): “Electric car battery manufacturer A123 Systems Inc., the recipient of nearly $250 million in government grants, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Tuesday.”

* Here’s what the president said about A123 Systems in 2010 when he gave them the grant: “This is about the birth of an entire new industry in America - an industry that’s going to be central to the next generation of cars.  When folks lift up their hoods on the cars of the future, I want them to see engines and batteries that are stamped: Made in America.”

What a schlemiel.

* Any Republican who still harbors the foolhardy view that that GOP organizations shouldn’t get involved in non-partisan races should consider the fact that Shelley Berkley – in a position to possibly become a United States Senator in three weeks – got her political start long ago as an elected “non-partisan” member of the University Board of Regents.

* Speaking of Berkley, she and her Republican opponent, Sen. Dean Heller, clashed on Jon Ralston’s “Ralston Reports” television show Monday night in Part 1 of a two-part debate.

Moderator Ralston not only had difficulty nailing Berkley down with specific questions about her controversial UMC vote, but was unable to corral the Democrat congresswoman who just wouldn’t stop talking and kept interrupting.  Annoying. Almost…Biden-like.  Round One: Heller.

Round Two: Tonight following Round Two of the Obama/Romney fight.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

"The pressure tonight is all on Barack Obama. His abysmal performance two weeks ago completely changed the nature of the campaign and he has to get the train back on track tonight, or he can curl up in the caboose and get some rest for the next three weeks.” – Rich Galen of Mullings.com
