RedState Briefing 10/16/2012

Morning Briefing
For October 16, 2012

1. Thomas Peterffy and the Freedom to Succeed
Thomas Peterffy is the founder of Interactive Brokers, an online brokerage firm. But he wasn’t always.

In 1956, Thomas Peterffy, unable to speak English, fled Hungary as the Iron Curtain was lowering on Eastern Europe. By the time Peterffy left Hungary, the communists were in charge. Around 350,000 people, many intellectuals and politicians, were purged by the communists. In 1956, Hungary went through a revolution that pushed out the Soviets until November of that year when the Soviets sent in 150,000 troops killing 20,000 people with a quarter million more fleeing for their lives.

Thomas Peterffy was one of those refugees. He went on to be an American success story. Now, this registered independent voter, has felt compelled to tell the world about the horrors of socialism and how it destroys success and erodes a nation’s work ethic. He has, out of his own pocket, produced an ad of him talking. He is, again with just his own money, running the ad on national news networks and in Ohio.

It is one of the most powerful ads you will see this campaign cycle. A refugee from a communist state has put his money where his mouth is and wants the world to know what happens when a nation punishes success. . . . please click here for the rest of the post

2. Hillary Clinton Prepares to See Underside of Obama Bus
I do hear that President Obama will let Hillary Clinton tour a tire factory this week so she can at least match a dress to the tire tread, but one way or the other, Hillary Clinton is now going under the Obama bus.

Joe Biden began the effort to throw Hillary under the bus in the debate Thursday night. He said the White House never knew about additional security requests. With a town hall style Presidential debate tomorrow night, Barack Obama needed plausible deniability. Hillary Clinton gave it to him on CNN. . . . please click here for the rest of the post

3.  Have Obama and Biden Overinvested In The Middle Class Tax Argument?
Every campaign involves strategic choices about where to attack your opponent. One of the major points of attack leveled by the Obama-Biden campaign against Mitt Romney is the Democrats’ claim that the Romney-Ryan tax plan would raise taxes on the middle class. There is evidence that this attack has done a good deal of damage to Romney, but it is beginning to look as if it is now blowing up in the Democrats’ face at just the wrong time. There’s a lesson there – similar to the lesson of the Democrats’ 2004 obsession with George W. Bush’s national guard service – about overplaying your hand in national elections. . . . please click here for the rest of the post

4.  Obama Imperils Another Potential Ally
One of the major foreign policy successes of the Bush administration was the effective recruiting of many of the former Soviet republics from a Moscow looking posture to one of looking to Washington or Brussels for guidance. The Baltic States and Poland have moved decisively to cast their lot with the West. Most of the various Balkan states now look West. Poland, Romania and the Czech Republic were brought into our ballistic missile defense system.

None of this make the kleptocracy in Moscow happy. As part of the infamous “reset” initiative these allies were tossed aside by the Obama regime. Under Obama, the policy of the United States has been to kowtow to Russian demands in virtually all things. Never mind that Russia is in both a demographic and economic death spiral and that Russia’s nukes are probably more dangerous to Russia than to anyone else. . . . please click here for the rest of the post
