Few individuals or organizations can say they've taken on -- and defeated -- the powerful Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) hierarchy responsible for the ugly strike denying 400,000 Chicago students the opportunity to learn.
You see, in the National Right to Work Foundation-won 1986Chicago Teachers Union v. Hudson precedent, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the CTU's forced-dues scheme and set up procedural safeguards to protect independent-minded workers.
The unanimous victory in Hudson has shaped labor law for decades and laid the groundwork for many of our other victories protecting worker freedom, including Knox v. SEIU,our most recent win at the High Court just a few months ago.
And our staff attorneys stand ready to leap into action if the strike turns violent or if the CTU hierarchy refuses to recognize the rights of independent-minded teachers.
That's why the Foundation has released a Special Legal Notice to Chicago teachers who disagree with the union-boss-ordered strike and wish to exercise their right to resign from the union and return to work.
And our ongoing Charter School Initiative has gained new relevance.
You see, the approximately 50,000 students who attend charter schools in Chicago have been able to continue their studies this week.
That's because the Chicago Teachers Union hierarchy does not -- yet -- enjoy monopoly bargaining powers in these schools.
Union bosses typically oppose charter school and school choice programs -- anything that endangers the teacher union hierarchy's dominance of our eduction system.
But where charter schools do exist, the union bosses operate under a different rule: If you can't beat them, join them.
Our Charter School Initiative informs charter school teachers and employees of their rights so that they can make decisions about union representation in an atmosphere free of union boss threats, harassment, coercion or misrepresentation.
