Michigan’s Governor Rick Snyder is trying to use a $550 million loan from the Canadians to draw down an estimated $2 billion of your tax dollars to use as federal highway matching funds for a new bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. The Michigan legislature has already rejected the plan but now Snyder is trying to go around them and a November ballot initiative that would let the people of Michigan have a say.
The new crossing will also cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars for customs plazas, staff, immigration and homeland security facilities. Even Governor Snyder admits federal taxpayers could be on the hook for more than $263 million. However, before he can spend your money he has to ask the Obama State Department for approval to build the new bridge.

Traffic is down by 40 percent on the existing three crossings that connect Detroit with Windsor, including a privately owned and operated bridge just two miles upstream from the proposed location of the new government bridge. The Obama administration already teamed up with Governor Snyder to send $200 million to Detroit for light rail and another $22 million to Detroit’s failing port.
Why should federal taxpayers send another $2 billion to Detroit for a bridge that’s not needed?
