I remember exactly where I was when I saw the horrific video footage trickle in from the Columbine massacre in 1999.
As the only real gun rights lobbyist in Colorado at the time, the phone began ringing off the hook asking for my thoughts.
My response then was similar to what I said just a few weeks ago in light of the Aurora Theater massacre:
My heart goes out to the victims and their families, but gun-grabbers have created millions of gun-free Criminal Safezones across the country, and new gun controls on our Second Amendment rights will only empower criminals and thugs.
If you hold similar sentiments, you well know that sometimes your co-workers, peers and even family and friends DO NOT agree with you.
They fire back with the same gun control lines they hear from politicians and commentators on TV and radio and read in the newspaper.
What we’ve experienced politically over the last few weeks is nearly identical to what occurred after Columbine in 1999 . . .
Left-wing anti-gunners banging the drums for gun control in Congress and at the state level.
Weak-kneed politicians (even many Republicans) beginning to back away from their so-called “pro-gun” positions.
And the media repeating relentlessly the gun control lines we’ve heard for decades.
You see, the gun control lobby waits with baited breath to move on gun control whenever they see the chance -- and high-profile shootings are when they thrive.
Just like after Columbine in 1999, wave after wave of anti-gun politicians step up to the plate to offer their so-called “remedy” to end gun violence.
But the only force that stands in the way of their gun controls from becoming law are you and me.
Less than two weeks ago, Democrat Senators Chuck Schumer and Frank Lautenberg attempted a ban on magazines used by sportsmen and for self-defense by burying an amendment deep inside Harry Reid’s "Cybersecurity Act" (S. 3414).
For nearly a week, NAGR members and supporters flooded Capitol Hill in Washington with hundreds of thousands of emails and phone calls demanding their Senators oppose the shameless gun grab.
Because of your pressure, anti-gun Harry Reid pulled the amendment . . . however, the threat is still alive, and when Congress returns from their summer recess in just a few weeks, expect to see it and other gun grabs once again.
The gun-grabbers aren’t going away.
You and I know the gun control lobby lives and dies by the “Never let a crisis go to waste” creed.
In the coming weeks and months heading into the November election, I fully expect the Obama administration to work behind the scenes to get some sort of gun control.
Whether it’s a push for a version of a UN Gun Ban, new online ammunition rules, regulations or even bans, magazine bans, bans on certain types of civilian firearms, or even an outright ban on the right to keep and bear arms, you and I must be ready to win the political battle.
The good news is, our Second Amendment rights have been in perilous situations like this before (see: Columbine in 1999).
Gun rights activists have risen to the occasion and applied the political pressure necessary to stop new gun controls in recent years.
But these fights will NOT be easy. In fact, they may be even tougher than before.
I’ll be sure to keep you updated on the movement of anti-gun legislation.
I need you to be mobilized and ready for these fights.
Stay alert. Stay involved. Take action.
For Freedom,
Dudley Brown
Executive Vice President
