MISSOURI - ILLEGAL ALIENS SEEK TO STOP CRACKDOWN

MISSOURI BILL DESIGNED TO CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
Missouri state Senator Will Kraus is pushing for a legislative crackdown on illegal immigration with a bill designed to deter illegal immigrants from coming to the state and to gather information on the impact of their presence. He also has a separate bill directing the state’s attorney general to sue the federal government for the financial burden illegal immigrants have on the state.  Illegal immigrant advocates are already gearing up for a fight to stop the bills which are not yet scheduled for a hearing. Vanessa Crawford, executive director of Missouri Immigration and Refugee Advocates calls the bill, “an attack on immigrant children and their families.”

Kraus’ bill would require public schools to tally the number of non-English speakers attending and then compel the state’s Board of Education to “identify the effects upon the standard or quality of education provided” to students who are here legally of sharing their school with those who are not.

Like other legislative crackdowns on illegal immigration, the bill also requires police to check the status of individuals in “any lawful stop, detention or arrest” if there is “reasonable suspicion.”  Illegal immigrants stopped by the police would be guilty of a misdemeanor. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, in 60 percent of cases reported to federal immigration authorities, officers are told to simply release the person.

Kraus is hoping his bill will make that number 100 percent.
