SWINE FLU KILLS NINE IN MEXICO, BORDER REMAINS WIDE OPEN
Swine flu, scientifically known as A(H1N1), is back already claiming nine victims in Mexico, with 573 cases detected as of Sunday. The strain is rapidly spreading with the total number of individuals infected increasing by 240 since Thursday last week. Authorities have not yet declared the new outbreak as a health emergency, but did begin tracking new cases last month. The first outbreak of the virus occurred in April 2009 in Mexico and the U.S. and became a global pandemic that claimed the lives of 17,000, with more than 1,250 of those deaths occurring in Mexico. The U.S.-Mexico border remains wide open for the virus to cross as the Obama administration has yet to enact any increased border security.
Then again, the U.S. failed to close the border during the 2009 pandemic when countries around the world were suspending all travel to and from Mexico.
