DOJ SUES UTAH OVER ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION LAW
The U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit yesterday challenging Utah’s immigration enforcement law, arguing that the federal government is the only entity with the authority to enforce immigration law. The DOJ also says the law could potentially lead to the harassment and detention of American citizens and authorized visitors.Utah’s law gives police discretion to check citizenship on traffic infractions and other lesser offenses. It also requires people to prove their citizenship if they’re arrested for serious crimes ranging from certain drug offenses to murder. State officials remain confident the law will be sustained.
