The U.S. is releasing 30 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as part of an international effort to make up for disruption in Libya's oil production, a decision aimed at increasing supply ahead of the nation's summer driving season, Obama administration officials said Thursday.
"We're heading into a period in which demand for oil tends to be at its highest," a senior administration official told reporters. "This release is intended to address that increasing demand."

The move drew immediate condemnation from Republicans and business interests opposed to tapping the emergency reserve for anything other than a critical cut-off of oil.

    McCarthy Statement on SPR Release

Washington D.C. – House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-22) released the follow in response to the announcement from the Obama Administration that they will release 30 million barrels of oil from the strategic petroleum reserve:

“Frankly, it's pathetic that Democrats not only block domestic energy production at every turn, President Obama is now drawing down on our nation’s ‘strategic’ oil reserve which is intended for national emergencies, not as a political tool when a President is feeling heat over high gas prices. The Obama Administration’s opposition to domestic energy production is hurting families and businesses already struggling to make ends meet and simply releasing 36 hours worth of oil does not constitute an energy plan. In contrast, House Republicans want to decrease America’s dependence on foreign sources of oil by pursuing an all-the-above energy plan that increases U.S. domestic production in order to bring down energy prices and create jobs here at home.”
