MUTH'S TRUTHS 04/12/2011

HEY, JOHNNY O….STOP STEALING!

Citizen Outreach placed a full-page ad in Tuesday’s Nevada Appeal calling on Assembly Speaker John Oceguera to stop stealing other legislator’s bills and making them his own.  You can view a copy of the ad here.

RIDDLE ME THIS, HYPERBOLE U

If there’s nothing left to cut in the UNLV budget…and if UNLV is located in the desert…and if we’re supposed to conserve both water and money by installing desert landscaping….then why, oh why, is there so much grass spread throughout the UNLV campus?  Inquiring minds wanna know.

SCREW MINING!

According to a tweet from the Sun’s Anjeanette Damon, the mining industry’s lobbyist, Tim Crowley, told her today that his “industry ‘could live’ with an income tax if there is consensus at the Legislature.”  In other words, in order to keep its precious tax deductions that no other industry or business in Nevada enjoys, mining is willing to shove an income tax up the rest of our collective wazoos.

Well, screw mining.  If the choice is whether they pay more or I pay more….up theirs!

THE ESTABLISHMENT’S CHOICE FOR GOP CHAIR?

More than a few heads were scratched last week with the announcement that former moderate Republican Rep. Jon Porter’s political corpse was raised in order to serve as honorary chairman of the Western Republican Leadership Conference in Las Vegas next October.  I mean…really….why?  Why not give incumbent Rep. Joe Heck the high-profile and prestigious slot?  Inquiring minds wanna know.

The only plausible explanation I’ve heard so far is that the GOP establishment is looking for someone possessing what they believe to be more gravitas with the donor community than Patrick McNaught or Amy Tarkanian to run for Chairman of the Nevada Republican Party if/when current Chairman Mark Amodei steps down to run for Congress in CD 2.

But if the establishment thinks they can get Porter, with his moderate voting record, past the conservative tea party activists who now control the Nevada GOP, they’re nuts.  Who’s their choice for vice-chairman…Bill Raggio?

ASSEMBLY REPUBLICANS: STILL THE WEAKEST LINK

The Las Vegas Sun on Sunday reminded us that Republicans in the Assembly are still entertaining the possibility of joining with Assembly Democrats while stabbing Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval in the back and throwing their GOP Senate colleagues under the bus to raise taxes this session by $600,000 million.

“Assembly Republicans have issued a list of five areas where they want to see traditionally conservative changes to law, one of them being education. In exchange for that, the caucus leader said, they would consider extending about $600 million in higher taxes that are set to expire, or ‘sunset,’ starting July 1.”

I think it’s time for some primary challengers to start organizing and planning their campaigns.
