Texas Demands “Reparations” From Washington – Lone Star Republicans Want Payback for the Cost of Southern Border Wave

As the border crisis continues to spiral out of control, southern state lawmakers keep ripping the federal government for offering no assistance.

Critics claim the crisis is not only a massive humanitarian issue, but it’s also a bona fide national security risk. On top of that, there’s the financial impact, which is felt especially by border states.

That’s why Texas Republicans are now demanding “reparations” from D.C.

Several GOP members in the Lone Star State introduced two bills this week, which would allow border communities to recoup some of the money they’ve spent defending the border on their own terms.

These lawmakers say the towns in question are spending billions to keep their people safe, while the Biden administration simply ignores the entire situation.

The first bill was presented by Rep. Dan Crenshaw and it hits Washington with a massive request (from Fox News):

The first bill, from Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, would require the federal government to pay back any state that has spent more than $2.5 billion on border security over the last decade. Crenshaw’s bill says that Texas qualifies, as it has spent more than $3.2 billion on the border since the 2008-2009 state budget was passed.

Crenshaw stated that “citizens of border states are being taxed twice for the same purpose.”

He’s saying states have to use taxpayer dollars in state budgets to protect the public, while the tax money sent to the federal government for the same purpose does nothing.

The bill specifically points out “failures of the federal government,” and that’s echoed in the second bill by Rep. Ronny Jackson.

This would create a grant program that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would use to reimburse border towns that are spending countless dollars, all to pick up the slack from Washington.

Said Jackson:

For the past two years, the Biden administration’s failed border policies have left our border communities on their own to deal with the influx of illegal immigrants crossing our southern border.

Drug dealers, human traffickers, and cartel members are marching through these communities and devastating everything in their path, yet Biden is still silent.

He finished by saying that border communities “should not be paying for Biden’s America-last agenda.

The bill would generate a grant pool of $25 million per year for the next 10 years. The DHS would distribute that money to border communities when they overspend to protect their citizens.

Any towns within 200 miles of the U.S./Mexico border would be eligible for these grants, as well as sanctuary jurisdictions that protect illegal migrants.

This is the latest legal push to crack down on the border crisis; recently, Gov. Greg Abbott appointed the state’s own “border czar.”

It comes after two full years of Vice President Kamala Harris doing nothing to help the crisis, as critics say. And there doesn’t appear to be much evidence that she made any effort to tackle the problem.

As a result, border states and towns are forced to fend for themselves, and with hundreds of thousands of illegals flooding in unchecked in just a matter of months, it’s a tough spot for those areas.

Key Takeaways:

  • Texas lawmakers introduced 2 bills that would allow border communities to recoup money they’ve spent on the border crisis.
  • Rep. Dan Crenshaw says these towns have spent billions to protect themselves, while the Biden administration does nothing.
  • Rep. Ronny Jackson added that citizens “should not be paying for Biden’s America-last agenda.”
