As of July 7, 2022 there can no longer be any 'Owner Operators/Truckers' in California that lease their trucks from a trucking company as they will need to be either just employee drivers or fully own their trucks as their own company, which of course may take 30-60 days to get implemented with all the paperwork and legal challenges such as purchasing a truck, getting insurance and starting their own company. The US Supreme Court has already refused to hear the case so it goes back to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and should become law. If you watch they speak about ANY trucks that come into California as well as if you were driving into Canada and Mexico you need a passport, as now any out of state 'lease' Owner Operators are prohibited into California. It will take time to receive a loan for another truck of their own as to stay an Owner Operator and they can be well over $100,000, and with the terminology of the loan it may state as a lease from the bank so that disqualifies them then and there. The last company I worked for asked if I wanted to become an Owner Operator to lease one of their trucks and I turned it down due to personal reasons, so I am not just posting this as a blogger would, as I have experience on the road with that company for over 7 years and drove in 42 states. So the plan by Newsom is to shut down the private trucking industry and make it a conglomerate set of companies with the same elite owners running them not the truckers. Is there a stipulation in the new law that the drivers can now only work eight hours a day and only 5 days a week, and if they hit that limit each day they must stop where they are at even when there is no location to stop and thus other violations can occur? And will they be paid per hour and not per mile, thus they will be treated as low income workers?
