Dear Friend,

Our district is fortunate to have a heavy active-duty military and veteran presence. Here are a few good news stories involving some of our nation’s finest --

Sergeant Trent Bailey has been deployed and unable to see his family for the last seven months. However, he said, he had to make it home for his son’s graduation in Blountstown. Even though the reunion will be short-lived, as Sergeant Bailey has to leave again in just a few days, he said the chance to watch his son graduate was well worth the trip. As for Royce, he said his dad being in the stands on his graduation day means the world to him. Read more here.

In 1943, William Oscar Wood served in the 93rd bombardment group as a tail gunner. Their mission on August 1 in World War II was Operation Tidal Wave. Wood’s plane, the Hell’s Wrench, flew at a very low altitude into Romania. However, it was hit several times by anti-aircraft guns and barrage balloons. Wood’s body is now coming home to Chiefland, Florida, where he will be laid to rest nearly 80 years later. Read more here.

Fifty-three years ago, a badly wounded Jan Scruggs was lying in a dense jungle in Vietnam, expecting to die. He said he implored God for a break. That break came in the form of Jimmy Mosconis — his platoon sergeant from Apalachicola, who also was wounded from the grenade attack and dragged him out to safety. The two Army veterans have maintained a strong friendship ever since. They also have gone on to make names for themselves. Read more here.
