Dear Friend, Our district faced a lot of rough weather in the past week, but we must not let it bring us down. Here are a few positive news stories to lift your spirits and get you ready for the weekend -- | Congratulations to Chipola Forestry Center Manager Mike Mathis and Tallahassee Forestry Center Manager Chris Colburn, recipients of the 2022 Wildfire Mitigation Award - the nation’s highest commendation for innovation and leadership in wildfire mitigation. These men, their teams, and firefighters from throughout North Florida were instrumental in protecting our communities. Because of them, we had no injuries or deaths. This recognition is well-deserved. Read more here. | A hero from Marianna is also receiving some well-deserved recognition. David “Shack” Cox was recently named Trooper of the Year by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) for using quick thinking and patience to save the life of a five-month-old after an armed abduction in January 2021. FHP Lieutenant Jason King said: “I’m not surprised because he’s always been a hard charger to try to go after anything he could outside the box.” Thank you, Trooper Cox! Read more here. | The 24th annual Lawn Mower Race Championship returned in Live Oak after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19 concerns. Despite the wet and muddy track, the Arc North Florida - which provides advocacy and services to individuals with disabilities in Columbia, Hamilton, Lafayette, Suwannee, and Baker counties - netted around $3,200 from the fundraising race. The nonprofit hopes next year’s event will be bigger and better than ever.
