Ratings for “Genocide Olympics” Tank While Concerns for Athletes’ Safety Rise

Ratings for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China, tanked during the first weekend, showing that Americans do not support holding the Games in China, probably for several reasons. Opening night on Thursday, February 3, 2020, posted the lowest ratings in 33 years.  Just 7.2 million people watched the Opening Ceremonies – down 55 percent from the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, and down 64 percent from the 2014 Winter Olympics held in Sochi, Russia. Weekend ratings for the Beijing Games improved little. NBC reported 15.8 million viewers over all platforms compared to 27.27 million who watched the 2016 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremonies in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – a significant 40% decline in viewership.
