This Week in the Office of Senator Marco Rubio On Tuesday, I attended the grand opening of Valencia Way, formerly Eureka Gardens, a federally contracted housing complex under U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Section 8 Project-Based Rental Assistance program. I spearheaded the efforts to rehabilitate the property after it was run into the ground by slumlords. After the grand opening ceremony and ribbon cutting, I spoke with members of the press and toured the rehabilitated property. Read more here. On Monday, Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) and I urged President Joe Biden to approve Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ request for an emergency declaration due to Tropical Storm Fred, which made landfall that day near Cape San Blas with maximum sustained winds at 65 miles per hour. On Wednesday, I led 24 Senate colleagues in sending a letter to U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin demanding a full account of U.S. military equipment left behind in Afghanistan, which has already or risks falling into the hands of the Taliban and their terrorist allies. On Thursday, I joined Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Armed Services, and 13 Senate colleagues in sending a letter to President Joe Biden urging him to fulfill his “solemn responsibility to evacuate all American citizens and Afghan partners without respect to arbitrary timelines dictated by the Taliban.” Read more here. On Tuesday, I released a statement after the People's Republic of China (PRC) took an ownership stake in the key subsidiary of ByteDance, the Beijing-based parent company of TikTok. The Chinese Government will now hold one of the three board seats belonging to Beijing ByteDance Technology Co. Ltd., which controls the licenses behind ByteDance’s domestic platforms. Read more here. On Tuesday, I sent a letter to YouTube Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Susan Wojcicki raising concerns with YouTube’s latest censorship of religious and politically conservative speech. Last Friday, I published an op-ed in the Washington Examiner discussing the provisions included in Senate Democrats’ $3.5 trillion budget, which, if passed by the House of Representatives, seeks to create an open borders welfare state run by the coastal elites. Last Friday, I wrote a Letter to the Editor of the Wall Street Journal discussing my efforts in 2017 to successfully expand the child tax credit while maintaining a work requirement in order to receive benefits. The Biden Administration’s child allowance has no work requirement, and is the first step towards a universal basic income. Read the full letter here. On Thursday, Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and I, along with 41 Senate colleagues, sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland to request an update on the status of Special Counsel John Durham’s review of the origins of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s inquiry into allegations of Russian collusion during the 2016 election. The letter also seeks to ensure the investigation is seen to completion and the final report is then released to the public. Read more here.
