GOOD NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICTDear friend, Take a deep breath and make this weekend a time of rest and recovery. Here is some good news to help you with this process. The red cockaded woodpecker, a native bird of the Panhandle, is no longer on the list of Florida’s endangered species. Following Hurricane Michael, 113,000 acres of the Apalachicola National Forest, which housed this species, were impacted by the storm. With help from the U.S. Forest Service and partners from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Long Leaf Alliance, the population has made a full recovery. Great work! You can read the full article here.
A Tallahassee lawyer is putting the courtroom on hold while she helps people get through the difficulties of the pandemic. Dana Brooks and her law partner Jimmy Fasiq are bringing good news to locals through their YouTube series Come Back. Their series highlights members of the community who overcame significant adversity in an effort to remind everyone that things do get better. You can read the full article here.
Many people have taken advantage of the pandemic by getting outside and getting in shape. For Chris Nikic, he has not only used this time to get in shape but complete a full IRONMAN. Chris set the record last weekend in Panama City Beach as the first athlete with Down Syndrome to participate and complete the event. Chris’s accomplishments have officially been added to Guinness World Records. Congratulations, Chris - you are an inspiration to all and an IRONMAN! You can read the full story here.
