On Monday, I joined Senator David Perdue (R-GA) and a bipartisan group of Senators in sending a letter to Taranjit Singh Sandhu, India’s Ambassador to the United States. In our letter, we expressed our strong support for India’s decision to formally invite Australia to participate in the annual Malabar naval exercise. The letter also expresses support for increased coordination among Quad members on non-security issues including humanitarian assistance, vaccine development, and infrastructure investment in the Indo-Pacific region. Legislation Introduced- On Tuesday, I joined Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in introducing a Senate resolution condemning the Maduro regime’s ongoing efforts to hold fraudulent legislative elections scheduled for this December. The upcoming fraudulent elections will fail to meet minimal democratic standards and are a direct attack against the nation’s National Assembly, the only remaining democratically-elected institution in Venezuela. - On Tuesday, Senators Jim Risch (R-ID), Susan Collins (R-ME), Josh Hawley (R-MO), and I introduced the Small Business Access to Recovery Capital Act. The legislation would provide expanded relief measures to the 7(a) loan program for one year to help businesses cope with challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Read more here.
- On Tuesday, Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and I introduced the Taiwan Relations Reinforcement Act , which seeks to update U.S. policy toward Taiwan to better reflect the realities on the ground. Read more here.
- On Friday, I joined Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR), John Cornyn (R-TX), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Doug Jones (D-AL), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Chris Coons (D-DE), Bob Casey (D-PA), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), and Todd Young (R-IN) in introducing a resolution that would designate October 23rd as a national day of remembrance for members of the United States Armed Forces who were killed or injured by the terrorist attack on the United States Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon on October 23, 1983.
