NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT
Dear friend,
Speaker Pelosi refused to bring the House back in Session to provide emergency funding to working Americans and small businesses. However, she is now forcing Members of Congress to travel back to the Capitol on Saturday to vote on a single bill that supports her Postal Service misinformation campaign against the President. Speaker Pelosi’s efforts not only waste taxpayer dollars, but they add fuel to the radical, liberal agenda that is staining our Republic.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) is already equipped with all the assets they need to ensure that every mail-in vote will be counted in the 2020 Election. I will not allow the Democrats’ propaganda machine to fabricate lies in yet another attempt to steal this election.
Here are the FACTS you should know –
- The Postal Service has been on an unsustainable financial path for decades. Since the rise of the internet, mail volume has decreased every year and losses at the Postal Service have piled up: a total of $69 billion has been lost between 2007 and 2018. 2006 was the last major federal bail-out of the USPS.
- USPS is educating states on how to make vote-by-mail successful by giving realistic timelines associated with delivering the mail. Some state election boards have deadlines and requirements that do not consider the reality of USPS operations and logistics. These constraints can cause ballots to not be returned in time to be counted. USPS took the prudent step to alert states if their requirements do not align with its established delivery times and what steps they can take to remedy the situation.
- The Postal Service is entirely capable of handling a relatively minor increase in mail volume ahead of the election and will in fact benefit from the associated revenue and relatively low costs of delivering more flat pieces of mail.
- Assuming every single registered American voter, about 158 million citizens, decided to vote by mail, the total possible increase in the volume of mail pieces is no more than 316 million (round trip mail). This number does not exceed the volume of a typical day of total USPS mail volume. This is just a rounding error to the USPS workload.
- USPS is financially troubled due to its long-term pension and health costs, but these are structural problems and completely unrelated to short term operational functions. They have stated that the USPS will be solvent and operational at least through August 2021. USPS has $14 billion cash on hand and, since April, has not requested any financial assistance to continue its operations although President Trump has proactively offered them over $10Bn if some unseen need arises.
We are wasting time with baseless conspiracy theories. The Democrats continue to focus on efforts that undermine President Trump, even while millions of Americans are hurting. My Republican colleagues and I will continue to fight against these propaganda lies and provide relief to Americans everywhere it is appropriate and necessary.
Sincerely,
Neal Dunn Member of Congress
