FLORIDA - SENATOR RICK SCOTT'S WEEK IN REVIEW 06/05/2020

Image
This week, Senator Rick Scott joined Americans in mourning the tragic death of George Floyd and calling for an end to injustice, violence, and hatred of any kind. All Americans deserve to be respected and to be heard, and it is incumbent upon each of us to unite and work together to make sure America is safe and everyone has an opportunity to live the American dream.

Violence does nothing to solve problems or bring our country together, and Senator Scott will continue to work to make sure Americans are safe and our law enforcement leaders have the resources they need to protect our communities.

Senator Rick Scott released the below statement following reports that Communist China delayed the release of the genetic map, or genome, of the coronavirus, stalling the recognition of its spread to other countries, as well as with the global development of tests, drugs and vaccines. The report also details Communist China’s refusal to release detailed patient data that could have helped save thousands of lives, and the ongoing failure of the World Health Organization (WHO) to obtain information from China.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Now we know for sure that Communist China hid critical data that could have altered the global response to the pandemic. Communist China was more concerned with their global image than with saving lives. And instead of exposing Communist China’s deceit to the global community, the World Health Organization praised their response and was complicit in China’s cover-up.

“The WHO clearly is not qualified to handle a worldwide health crisis, which is why I’m leading an investigation into their failures that led to the spread of the coronavirus. The President was right to cut funding to the WHO, and now the U.S. must take steps to hold Communist China accountable for the spread of the virus. We also know Communist China is actively trying to steal or sabotage American efforts to develop a coronavirus vaccine, which is why I introduced a bill to make sure that doesn’t happen. We must all remain vigilant of this Communist nation that refuses to be an honest partner.” Read more HERE.

Senators Rick Scott, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Roger Wicker and Dianne Feinstein introduced the bipartisan, bicameral American Space Commerce Act of 2020, which would bolster U.S. leadership in the space industry, enhance public-private partnerships with American companies, and further increase U.S. innovation.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Our nation is competing against known adversaries like Communist China and Russia in the space launch industry, and we must put American interests and national security first. I’m proud to sponsor the American Space Commerce Act to enhance our nation’s self-reliance in the space industry, prioritize American businesses, and ensure our nation remains a leader in space exploration.” Read more from Senator Rubio's office HERE.
Senator Rick Scott sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo requesting additional information on the Administration’s plan to support Hong Kongers seeking refuge from Communist China following the revocation of Hong Kong's special status. Read more, including the full letter, HERE.

Senator Rick Scott wrote an op-ed for Fox Business on how the United States and the United Kingdom have a significant opportunity to strengthen their longstanding relationship and stand strong against Communist China, especially considering China’s deception and lies surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

In the op-edSenator Rick Scott wrote, “… Britain’s exit from the EU came with many challenges, but also with significant opportunities.

First among them is a renewed sense of optimism for a new Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the United States and the United Kingdom.

… I’ve had many meetings with the U.K.’s new Minister of State for Trade Policy, Greg Hands, who is leading the negotiations between the United States and the United Kingdom, to reiterate my strong support for aggressive trade. We cannot let the Coronavirus pandemic stall the important progress being made.

… I’ve been warning about it for months, but communist China’s deception surrounding the coronavirus pandemic is the last straw. It doesn’t matter to communist China that their lies and misinformation killed hundreds of thousands around the world.

… Brexit was a watershed moment in the history of Europe and, more importantly, the history of the special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom. With trade negotiations ongoing, we must take this opportunity to cement our economic partnership for generations to come and stand united against the global threat presented by communist China. I hope we will reach a deal that is positive to both our nations.

We cannot let this opportunity go to waste.”
