On Monday, I joined CNBC’s Squawk Box to discuss the need for Democrats to quit holding small businesses hostage and reach a deal to provide additional funding for the Paycheck Protection Program. The Senate and House passed additional funding for small businesses, hospitals, and coronavirus testing later in the week, and President Trump signed the deal into law on Friday. On Thursday, as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, I sent a letter to a number of large banking institutions who participate in the Paycheck Protection Program requesting information on their application process amid recent reports certain large banks prioritized borrower applications, which is a violation of congressional intent of the program. On Thursday, Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) and I, Ranking Member and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, along with Representative Nydia Velázquez (D-NY), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Small Business, sent a letter to Jovita Carranza, Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), asking the agency for a complete accounting with regard to recent reports of a data breach of personally identifiable information for nearly 8,000 businesses that had applied for the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program. On Monday, I joined Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Gary Peters (D-MI) in urging Administrator Stephen Dickson of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to prevent any of the $10 billion in airport grants passed in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to be used for contracts with Chinese-owned or subsidized companies. Last Friday, as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, I sent a letter to Jovita Carranza, Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), and Steven Mnuchin, Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, detailing a number of procedures and guidance that should be clarified within the Paycheck Protection Program while the agencies cannot approve more forgivable loans to small businesses due to the lapse in appropriations. On Thursday, Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and I urged Secretary of Defense Mark Esper to continue to maintain the readiness of U.S. forces under Indo-Pacific Command. This request comes after the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) recently carried out military exercises and maritime militia confrontations intended to threaten and intimidate American allies and partners in the Asia-Pacific.
