This Week in the Office of Senator Marco Rubio

On Thursday, I released the following statement after the Senate approved H.R. 5430, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement Implementation Act (USMCA). Read more here.
On Wednesday, I published an op-ed in Fox News discussing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s misguided decision to delay sending articles of impeachment to the Senate and the importance of conducting a trial based on the evidence passed by the House. Read the full article here.
On Tuesday, I applauded the Senate confirmation of Peter Gaynor to be Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Read more here.
On Tuesday, I joined Cuba Decide’s campaign urging for the immediate release of José Daniel Ferrer, leader of the Patriot Union of Cuba (UNPACU), and of all political prisoners of the Castro and Díaz-Canel regime in Cuba. José Daniel Ferrer has been unjustly detained by the Cuban regime as a political prisoner for more than 100 days. Read more here.
  
On Wednesday, I joined Senators Jim Risch (R-ID) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) in sending a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and USAID Administrator Mark Green, asking them to ensure that the administration continues to support Burma as it moves toward free and democratic parliamentary elections in 2020. On Wednesday, as Cochair of the bipartisan and bicameral Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) and a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, I released a statement with regard to the signing of the “phase one” deal with China. Read more here.
On Wednesday, as Chair of the bipartisan and bicameral Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC), Representative James McGovern (D-MA), and I sent a letter to President Trump urging the administration to be “tenacious advocates” for American citizens and legal permanent residents detained in China, and to “vigorously push back” against the use of “exit bans,” which are used to stop American citizens from leaving China in order to coerce settlement in business disputes or to force cooperation in investigations of their relatives living outside China. On Thursday, as Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) and I sent a letter to Jovita Carranza, Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, urging her to take immediate action to help small businesses prepare for potential cybersecurity threats from Iran and its proxies. On Thursday, I issued the following statement after the Peace Corps formally notified members of Congress it will be withdrawing its volunteers from China beginning in June 2020. Read more here.
  
On Thursday, Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) and I wrote to R.D. James, the Assistant Secretary of the Army – Civil Works, ahead of the Army Corps Engineers finalizing their Fiscal Year 2020 work plan, to ensure that, “all proposed and ongoing projects in Florida receive full and fair consideration of their value to local communities, our state, and our nation.” Read more here.

  • I joined Senators Mark Warner (D-VA), Richard Burr (R-NC), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Michael Bennet (D-CO), and John Cornyn (R-TX) in introducing legislation to encourage and support U.S. innovation in the race for 5G by providing over $1 billion to invest in Western-based alternatives to Chinese equipment providers Huawei and ZTE, malign state-directed telecommunications companies that pose a clear and growing threat to the economic and national security of the U.S. and our allies.   • I joined Senator Edward J. Markey (D-MA) in introducing legislation to enhance accountability for Chinese officials involved in unjustly banning American citizens from leaving China. Read more here.
  • I joined Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Martha McSally (R-AZ), James Lankford (R-OK), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Ted Cruz (R-TX), and Mitt Romney (R-UT) in introducing a resolution making clear the United States Senate stands with the Iranian people. This resolution comes just days after thousands of Iranians took to the streets to protest the oppressive Iranian regime’s policies and the downing of a Ukrainian passenger jet. Read more here.
