WashPost: GOP Sens. Discussing Delaying Impeachment Trial to Hurt 2020 Dems
Some GOP senators are itching to put a dent into the Democratic primaries by using delay tactics during President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, reports The Washington Post.

Public impeachment hearings begin this week in the House of Representatives.

A hearing in the Senate could last five or six weeks. Six Democratic senators are running for president and had previously planned to leave the Capitol before the Feb. 3 Iowa caucuses and the Feb. 11 New Hampshire primary.
“That might be a strategy,” GOP Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin told the Post when asked about the possibility of a trial that disrupts the presidential campaign. “But I’ll leave that up to others. I’m just a lowly worker.”
The first two impeachment inquiry witnesses – diplomats Bill Taylor and George Kent – testified together Wednesday on Capitol Hill. Taylor told lawmakers about another conversation where Trump voiced his request to push the Ukrainians to publicly announce investigations into Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
Some GOP senators are calling for a swift result. But the issue of trial length was discussed Wednesday during a closed-door lunch meeting with all Republican senators. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, per the Post, said the trial would last as long as the Senate wants to run it.
