NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT

Dear Friend,

This week, we voted to protect our military assets in the Gulf and introduced legislation to expand opportunities for veterans to work with service dogs. Please read about my week below:

Protecting the Joint Gulf Range ComplexThis week, the House passed legislation to protect the Joint Gulf Range Complex from drilling. The Joint Gulf Range Complex is not only an incomparable asset to our defense sector in Florida, but it is also a one of a kind resource that is strengthening our military efforts worldwide. The United States is a world leader in national security and military readiness, in part due to the ability to test and train with live fire at these vital training areas. Protecting this asset in the Gulf is crucial to ensuring our military continues to hold a strategic advantage over our enemies abroad.

The PAWS for Veterans Therapy ActThis week, I joined several of my colleagues in introducing H.R. 4305, the Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers (PAWS) for Veterans Therapy Act. This legislation will create a pilot program within the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) to give veterans access to treatment derived from working with service dogs. America’s veterans fought for our freedoms, and as a result, many grapple with the physical and mental scars of war. Ensuring our service members have the resources to heal from these wounds should be a top priority. This important legislation is a step in the right direction in addressing a portion of the many needs of our growing veteran population.

Congressional App ChallengeImage
The Congressional App Challenge is in full swing and the deadline for submissions is November 1st. Students must submit their apps and additional materials by October 15th. The Congressional App Challenge is a programming competition for students in high school and younger. Students, individually or in teams, are tasked with creating, coding, and implementing a new and innovative computer application. The demand for computer programmers is rapidly growing and we cannot keep up. The Congressional App Challenge is a great way to highlight America’s talented young programmers and encourage students to develop their technology skills.

Constituent Services Corner
A constituent contacted our office after a glitch in the Social Security Administration's (SSA) system reflected them as deceased and their benefits were stopped for months. My office was able to work with SSA to have the error corrected and their benefits reinstated.
