House spending leaders want to break a decade long pay freeze and give members of Congress a cost-of-living bump that could pad their salaries with an extra $4,500 next year. Congressional salaries have been frozen at about $174,000 since 2009, when Democrats controlled Congress and decided to suspend automatic cost-of-living increases while heading into the 2010 election year.
Now, House Democrats say they are moving forward with fiscal 2020 funding bills that won’t block those pay increases, which are guaranteed by a 1989 federal ethics law.  “There is strong bipartisan support for these modest inflation adjustments,” said Evan Hollander, a spokesperson for the House Appropriations Committee, noting that the panel does not have to take action to allow the automatic increases and will simply be forgoing language that would block the raises.

FreedomWorks Joins Free-Market Coalition Against Socialized Medicine

A group of leading conservative and free-market groups launched Thursday the Coalition Against Socialized Medicine, an effort aimed at countering the growing Democratic calls for “Medicare for all.” The coalition’s members include the American Conservative Union, American Commitment, Citizens Against Government Waste, the Club for Growth, the Committee to Unleash Prosperity, FreedomWorks, Heritage Action for America and the National Taxpayers Union.
“Under the guise of innocuous-sounding and misleading names like ‘Medicare for All,’ liberals are pursuing radical proposals that would completely abolish private health insurance plans – which currently cover over 250 million Americans – in an effort to impose socialized medicine schemes in the United States,” said the coalition in a statement.

President Donald Trump commemorated the 75th anniversary of D-Day on Thursday and delivered the following speech in honor of those “thousands [who] sacrificed their lives” for liberty:
"President Macron, Mrs. Macron, and the people of France; to the First Lady of the United States and members of the United States Congress; to distinguished guests, veterans, and my fellow Americans: We are gathered here on Freedom’s Altar. On these shores, on these bluffs, on this day 75 years ago, 10,000 men shed their blood, and thousands sacrificed their lives, for their brothers, for their countries, and for the survival of liberty. Today, we remember those who fell, and we honor all who fought right here in Normandy. They won back this ground for civilization.

Bipartisan Effort Kills Sen. Paul's Fiscally Responsible Pennies Plan to Balance the Federal Budget

This year, Sen. Rand Paul's (R–Ky.) effort to balance the federal budget didn't even get a floor vote in the Republican-controlled Senate. Paul's so-called "Pennies Plan" failed a procedural vote on Monday evening when only 22 senators voted in favor of a cloture motion that would have brought the bill to a final vote. A majority of Republicans and all Democrats voted against proceeding to a floor vote on the bill. It's another sign that fiscal responsibility is all but dead in Congress, even as the national debt heads toward record highs and the budget deficit approaches $1 trillion this year.
"We teach our children that money doesn't grow on trees, and then they grow up watching politicians pretend otherwise," Paul said before the vote. "Meanwhile, our debt soars past $22 trillion, endangers our country, and artificially limits what our nation can achieve."

ALEC-FreedomWorks State Legislator of the Month

State legislators get elected and fight every day because they care about advancing sound policy for their constituents. That’s why ALEC focuses on helping those who stand up as citizen legislators – like Montana Senator Jennifer Fielder.
Senator Fielder’s work doesn’t stop in the Montana Capitol. She is the CEO of the nonprofit organization American Lands Council, which charts a peaceful path to better and more accountable management of public lands and natural resources. She has dedicated her life to making Montana a better place for everyone. When there is federal mismanagement of your and your neighbor’s backyard, it’s time to have you and your neighbor management the land instead. Senator Fielder gets that, and it’s why she is awarded the June ALEC-FreedomWorks State Legislator of the Month.

FreedomWorks Supports Constitutional Amendment for Term Limits

FreedomWorks has thrown its support behind a term limits amendment. President Adam Brandon said Americans’ general disillusionment with Congress shows the need to limit time in Washington:
“When the American people voted to ‘drain the swamp,’ they sent a clear message to all elected officials that the citizens want a change in Washington. This legislation will ensure that it remains drained. Having the same people in office year after year creates a cycle that is hard to break and that needs to be refreshed. Term limits would not only refresh the cycle, but they would also address a dysfunction in the structure of our federal government.”

Americans Believe Fake News Is a Bigger Problem Than Climate Change

Americans believe fake news is a bigger problem for the U.S. than climate change or racism, according to a study Wednesday from the Pew Research Center. Fifty percent of Americans surveyed said made-up news is a “very big problem.” By comparison, only 46% of people said the same about climate change, and roughly 40% consider racism to be equally as detrimental for the country, the poll shows.
About 38% of people between the ages of 18 and 29 agree with the beliefthat climate change should be a factor when deciding to have a child, according to a Business Insider poll conducted in March. Around a third of Americans overall — 30% — believe the same.
