Sheriffs Warn ICE Could Be Forced To Release 8,300 Criminal Aliens

“America’s sheriffs are warning Congress to stop a proposed backroom deal that would institute a ceiling on the number of illegal immigrants that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) can detain,” David Krayden writes in The Daily Caller.

“Capping the number of detention beds utilized by ICE not only jeopardizes the integrity of the immigration system, but would cripple ICE’s ability to detain criminal aliens and other aliens who pose a risk to public safety or are a flight risk,” the sheriffs say. More than 8,300 criminally charged or convicted individuals could be put back on the streets.

“We are at wits end on this,” said Sheriff Thomas M. Hodgson of Bristol County, Massachusetts, about efforts by House and Senate Democrats to cut funding for a border wall and ICE detention facilities. “‘This really is a catastrophe,’ he said of the anti-Trump proposal backed by Democrats,” Paul Bedard reports in the Washington Examiner. “Hodgson said that his jail holds some 200 criminal illegal immigrants and he bluntly said that if any were to be freed, they would go out and commit more crimes.”
“Another large group of migrants are in custody after showing up at a remote border crossing in southwestern New Mexico,” The Associated Press reports. “U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the 330 Central Americans were apprehended early Monday at the Antelope Wells port of entry, 122 miles (197 kilometers) west of El Paso, Texas. This marks the second large group to be arrested near the port in less than a week.”
“As President Trump said in his recent State of the Union Address, we must invest in the industries of the future—and few industries are more important than [artificial intelligence],” Deputy U.S. Chief Technology Officer Michael Kratsios writes in Wired. With an executive order yesterday, President Trump launched the American AI Initiative. “Ultimately, we will win the race for AI, and we will do it without compromising our American values,” Kratsios writes.
In The Wall Street Journal, Hudson Institute Senior Fellow Tod Lindberg writes that President Trump is serious about diplomacy with North Korea. The Trump Administration’s approach “compares favorably with the one the Obama administration took toward Iran, never demanding an end to nuclear programs and settling for a deal that came nowhere close. When Mr. Trump ditched the Iran deal before engaging North Korea, he signaled his commitment to stricter terms in his talks with Mr. Kim.”
