US Holds Talks With Chinese Officials as Trade War Looms

China’s Ministry of Commerce sent trade officials to Washington this week at the invitation of the United States. This is a welcome respite from all the talk of a trade war between the two countries, but we are still far from an armistice. While the talks between Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Wang Shouwen and U.S. Treasury Undersecretary David Malpass are taking place Aug. 22 and 23, it will likely be too late to stop Customs and Border Protection from collecting taxes on $16 billion worth of imports from China starting on Aug. 23. However, fruitful dialogue could pre-empt the tax on $200 billion worth of imports that could ... Read More

Devos Eyes Use of Federal Funds to Arm Teachers

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is looking at a plan to permit states to use federal money to buy guns for teachers, The New York Times is reporting. In March, Congress allocated $50 million a year to local school districts, but prohibited the use of the money for guns. But the Education Department is now looking at a program that uses the Student Support and Academic Enrichment grants as a way to fund the weapons. A panel of judges on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that Alabama’s effort to outlaw the gruesome dismemberment abortion procedure has to be struck down because that’s the precedent set by the U.S. Supreme Court. But the judges then gave their superiors in Washington a tongue-lashing for such an “aberration.” The fight was over an Alabama law that outlawed those dismemberment procedures. But Judge Joel Dubina had a few comments about what happened: “I write separately to agree on record with Justice ... Read More

Democrats Are Leaving Their Party in Droves. Conservatives Should Pay Attention.

Two thousand years ago, St. Paul found himself blinded by a bright light on the road to Damascus. The dramatic experience led him to stop persecuting his opponents and to take up new beliefs. Today, many former leftists are taking their first steps on their own road to Damascus, and the right is not doing nearly enough to capitalize on this unprecedented mass exit from the left. It all began just a few short weeks ago when gay New York hairdresser Brandon Straka posted a hard-hitting video explaining why he is no longer a Democrat or a liberal. Since then, his ... Read More

One Juror Stopped Manafort From Being Convicted on All Counts

One lone holdout on the Paul Manafort jury stopped special counsel Robert Mueller’s team from winning a conviction on all 18 counts against the former Donald Trump campaign chairman, juror Paula Duncan told Fox News. "It was one person who kept the verdict from being guilty on all 18 counts," Duncan, 52, said. Duncan, who is a supporter of President Trump, spoke to the news network after the jury found Manafort guilty on eight financial crime counts. It was deadlocked on 10 others. Duncan said the unidentified jury expressed "reasonable doubt” and could not be swayed by the rest of the juror. ... Read More
