DAILY BELLWETHER 07/20/2018 REP WATERS DETESTS THE USA

Maxine Waters Supporters Burn American Flag outside her Office

A small crowd that gathered Thursday outside the Los Angeles office of U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters to counter an expected protest by a self-styled militia group burned an American flag taken from the back of a pickup truck. The incident happened after the far-right Oath Keepers group didn’t appear at the office after saying it would rally against the congresswoman. A group of counter-protesters there to support Waters were chanting “black power” and other slogans when the pickup approached. The vehicle, occupied by two men who appeared to be white, was stopped by the crowd. Some marchers ... Read More

Trump Slams Obama as 'Patsy' for Russia

President Donald Trump on Thursday insisted he has been tough on Russia, describing former President Barack Obama as a "patsy" for the Kremlin. "Obama didn't do it," Trump told CNBC in an interview at the White House. "Obama was a patsy for Russia. "A total patsy." Under continuing fire for his Helsinki, Finland, comments Monday that backed Russian President Vladimir Putin over U.S. intelligence agencies on election meddling, Trump told reporters Wednesday "there's been no president ever as tough as I have been on Russia." Obama, however, sanctioned Moscow over its annexation of Crimea in 2014 and joined with other allies ... Read More

Dem Running for Alaska U.S. House Seat Has Never Been to State

Carol Hafner is on the Democratic primary ballot for an Alaska U.S. House seat. She doesn’t live in Alaska. In fact, she’s never been to the state. Hafner, who listed New Jersey and South Dakota addresses in her candidate filing, says she’s serious about running, though she doesn’t plan to campaign in person. Democratic officials are questioning her authenticity and political affiliation. Under the U.S. Constitution, to serve in Congress one must meet age and citizenship requirements and inhabit the state at the time elected. Generally, Alaska candidates in such races are from the state. But not always. In 2014, a New York man, ... Read More

House $5 Billion Border Wall Bill Cheered by White House

The White House on Wednesday backed a House spending bill that includes $5 billion to build a border wall, saying it will pay for another 200 miles of physical barrier on the border with Mexico. “This funding is critical to the administration’s top priority, securing the nation’s borders,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement. She said the extra spending on border security was “essential to deterring, preventing, and denying illegal border crossings by would-be illegal immigrants, human traffickers, criminal aliens, child smugglers, and drug dealers.” The wall is the centerpiece of Mr. Trump’s effort to reduce rampant illegal immigration across ... Read More

Nikki Haley Defends Decision to Leave UN Human Rights Council

The United States’ withdrawal from the United Nations Human Rights Council has nothing to do with its commitment to human rights, Ambassador Nikki Haley said Wednesday in a fiery speech at The Heritage Foundation. “No one should make the mistake of equating membership in the Human Rights Council with support for human rights. To this day, the United States does more for human rights, both inside the U.N., and around the world, [than] any other country. And we will continue to do that,” said Haley, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, in prepared remarks. “We just won’t do it inside a council that consistently fails ... Read More
