Trump to Kelly: 'You’ve been called a lot worse' than bimbo
by Eliza Collins - USA TODAY

Donald Trump doesn’t think his retweet of someone calling Megyn Kelly a “bimbo” was that bad — he says she's probably “been called a lot worse.” In a much-hyped interview with the Fox News host — after nearly a year of slamming her — Trump acknowledged his attacks on her, but stopped short of apologizing. During the FOX Broadcasting special Megyn Kelly Presents, Trump told Kelly that he expected she had gotten some pretty nasty tweets from his supporters when the two of them were in the middle of their spat. But he chalked it up to fans just showing their loyalty. Kelly responded that it wasn't just supporters who Trump retweeted. Over the past nine months the Fox reporter has been attacked repeatedly by Trump himself, as well as his followers via Twitter. “You would be amazed at the ones I don’t retweet,” Trump said. [...]

Bombings kill at least 69 in Iraq

A suicide bomb detonated in Baghdad’s Sadr City on Tuesday. Estimates by a U.S. led coalition show the Islamic State
has lost 45% of the territory it once held in Iraq. The recent bombings reflect growing pressure
the Islamic State is coming under, analysts say.

Don’t be a sucker for the new old socialism
From the USSR to Venezuela, experience reveals
Sanders' policies wouldn't enrich anyone but a ruling elite.

by Glenn Harlan Reynolds - USA TODAY
It is a common misconception that socialism is about helping poor people. Actually, what socialism does is create poor people, and keep them poor. Under capitalism, rich people become powerful. Under socialism, powerful people become rich. In Venezuela, the rulers are fabulously wealthy even as the ordinary citizenry deals with empty supermarket shelves and electricity rationing. In Cuba, Fidel Castro reportedly has lived like a king, even as his subjects dwelt in poverty. In the old Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, as Hedrick Smith reported in his The Russians, the communist big shots had lavish country houses and apartments in town stocked with hand-polished fresh fruit, even as the common people stood in line for hours at state-run stores in the hopes of getting staples. There’s always a lot of talk about free health care, but it’s generally substandard for the masses and fancy for the elite. [...]

Sri Lankan Red Cross: Over 220+ families missing in mudslides
by Jane Onyanga-Omara - USA TODAY

More than 200 families were missing Wednesday after three villages were buried by a landslide in central Sri Lanka, the Red Cross said. The disaster hit the remote Aranayake area on Tuesday after days of heavy rain. The villages — Siripura, Pallebage and Elagipitya in Kegalle District — are about 45 miles north of the capital Colombo. [...]

Mountains of mud set to fly in presidential race
Support staffs busily mining records for nuggets of negativity
by Fredreka Schouten - USA TODAY

WASHINGTON - In a downtown Washington office, researchers at a Democratic super PAC pore over Trump University lawsuit filings, reading newspaper clips and even watching old episodes of The Celebrity Apprentice. Less than 2 miles away, the Republican National Committee’s research staff is busy with more than 500 public records requests about Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton’s tenure in office. Republicans built a text-searchable database of every scrap of video she’s appeared in since the 1980s, and the RNC even posted a staffer in Little Rock for more than a year to make almost daily trips to the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum in the hopes of uncovering damaging information about the former first lady. The mud is about to fly as Clinton and GOP presumptive nominee Donald Trump grow closer to a general election showdown. Voters are getting a taste of how ugly it will be. In recent days, Trump’s conduct with women and his past use of pseudonyms to masquerade as his own publicist have made front-page news, as have revelations that a Clinton charity helped a for-profit company, partly owned by people with ties to the Clintons. Trump and his allies have made it clear they consider former president Bill Clinton’s marital infidelities fair game in the election fight. In recent interviews, Trump and his convention manager Paul Manafort sought to cast Clinton as her husband’s “enabler.” [...]

Ivanka Trump on 'NYT' story: 'pretty disturbing'
by Eliza Collins - USA TODAY

Ivanka Trump says she thinks a New York Times story claiming that her father mistreats women is a distortion of the facts, adding that she found the story to be “pretty disturbing.” "I found it to be pretty disturbing, based on the facts as I know them," Trump’s daughter told CBS host Norah O'Donnell in an interview that will air in full on Wednesday's "This Morning" show. "And obviously, I very much know (the facts), both in the capacity as a daughter and in the capacity as an executive who's worked alongside of him at this company for over a decade . . . I was bothered by (the story)." [...]

Trump’s remarks on U.S. debt a refreshing blast of reality
‘Loose cannon’ Trump may take aim at Wall Street
by Darrell Delamaide - Special for USA TODAY

WASHINGTON - Let’s face it — Donald Trump is smarter than he looks.
For all the personality flaws the press loves to dwell on, the presumptive Republican nominee understands more about real world finance than all the deficit hawk politicians in both parties put together. As he clarified his remarks about consolidating U.S. debt by buying back bonds at a discount when interest rates rise, he was setting the record straight on those who thought he meant to renege on the debt and effectively default. Not at all, Trump said last week. And then he dropped another bombshell in explaining why that’s not even possible. “This is the United States government,” Trump said on CNN. “First of all, you never have to default because you print the money, I hate to tell you, OK?” Bingo. With a stroke, Trump demolished decades of homage by many economists and virtually all politicians to the straitjacket of a monetarist dogma that ignores the realities of present-day finance. [...]

2016 teaches graduates the wrong lessons
Commencement speakers should stress that leading
with humility, not bluster, is the best way to succeed.
by James M. Danko - USA TODAY

Make your bed. Change the world. Chase your dreams. Defy expectations. Each of these bits of standard graduation-speech wisdom is important. But if there’s one piece of advice this year's commencement speakers should impart, and graduates should heed, it’s this: Be humble. We’re in the midst of a presidential election cycle in which shows of bluster and displays of personal dominance have become prerequisites for advancing in the polls. [...]

Why we still don't have flying cars
After regulation exploded in 1970, innovation hit a sustained speed bump.
by Glenn Harlan Reynolds - USA TODAY

We used to get rockets to the Moon. Now we get Facebook. That’s the essence of a complaint, published in the MIT Technology Review, that technological progress is slowing down, and becoming less useful. The author, David Rotman, writes: In a three-month period at the end of 1879, Thomas Edison tested the first practical electric lightbulb, Karl Benz invented a workable internal-combustion engine, and a British-American inventor named David Edward Hughes transmitted a wireless signal over a few hundred meters. These were just a few of the remarkable breakthroughs that Northwestern University economist Robert J. Gordon tells us led to a “special century” between 1870 and 1970, a period of unprecedented economic growth and improvements in health and standard of living for many Americans. Growth since 1970? “Simultaneously dazzling and disappointing.” Think the PC and the Internet are important? Compare them with the dramatic decline in infant mortality, or the effect that indoor plumbing had on living conditions. And the explosion of inventions and resulting economic progress that happened during the special century are unlikely to be seen again. [...]
