The FBI is looking into claims that CIA Director John Brennan's personal AOL email was hacked, a law enforcement source confirmed to Fox News.
An anonymous hacker, who spoke to the New York Post, earlier claimed to have breached Brennan's personal account and had posted documents online, including a list of email addresses purportedly from Brennan's contact file.
A CIA spokesman said they are aware of the claims: "We are aware of the reports that have surfaced on social media and have referred the matter to the appropriate authorities.''
An FBI representative declined to comment on the reports.
The New York Post described the purported hacker in an article published Sunday as "a stoner high school student," motivated by his opposition to U.S. foreign policy and support for Palestinians. His Twitter account includes links to files that he says are Brennan's contact list, a log of phone calls by then-CIA deputy director Avril Haines, and other documents.
The Post said he didn't reveal his name or where he lived.
The hacker also claimed to have breached a Comcast account belonging to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.
One document purporting to come from Brennan's AOL email account contains a spreadsheet of people, including senior intelligence officials, along with their Social Security numbers, although the hacker redacted the numbers in the version he posted on Twitter. It's unclear why Brennan would have stored such a document in his private email account.
Based on the titles, the document appears to date from 2009 or before.
When people visit the White House and other secure facilities, they are required to supply their Social Security numbers. Brennan could have been forwarding a list of invitees to the White House when he was President Obama's counterterrorism adviser, the job he held before he became CIA director in 2013.
Security experts advise people not to email Social Security numbers, and some companies have software that automatically blocks an email if it detects characters in the format of a Social Security number.
The hacker told the Post he had obtained a 47-page version of Brennan's application for a security clearance, known as an SF86. That document -- millions of which were stolen from the federal personnel office last year by hackers linked to China -- contains detailed information about past jobs, foreign contacts, finances and other sensitive personal details.
No such document appears to be posted on the hacker's Twitter account, but it's not clear whether the hacker posted it elsewhere.

The Secret Service is moving forward on activating 24-hour protection for Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Ben Carson, Fox News has learned.
The agency sent letters Monday to key leaders in Congress who have to sign off on the proposal, which Fox News is told would involve a rotation of 260 Secret Service agents. Congress traditionally approves such requests.
The development comes after an aide to Carson met with the U.S. Secret Service's Dignitary Protection Division to request protection for the candidate as threats against him have grown, according to a source familiar with the conversation.
The source told Fox News that a representative for Trump's campaign also made contact with the Secret Service on Friday.
Trump last week was outspoken in calling for Secret Service protection, saying that while he has a private security team, his rallies have gotten large.
"We're getting the biggest crowds," he told Fox News' "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren" last Thursday, acknowledging his team has been speaking with the Secret Service while suggesting a double-standard was at play for Republican and Democratic candidates. "If I was a Democrat, they'd have it but it's really up to them. They know what they're doing, and I assume they're doing the right thing. I would hope they are doing the right thing."
Newsmax first reported over the weekend that the two GOP candidates were likely to get Secret Service protection amid heightened threats against them.
While it is rare for such official protection to be given to candidates before they officially get their party's nomination, the Secret Service will make exceptions based on threats. For example, then-Sen. Barack Obama received protection early in 2007, long before he secured the nomination, amid an uptick in threats against the man who would be the first black president.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has had Secret Service protection dating back to her days as first lady, and has that protection on the campaign trail now.

The highly-respected international organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) escalated their campaign against Obama by issuing new charges and new evidence over the weekend that the US willfully bombed their hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan, and then sent in heavy vehicles to plow over the evidence. An unnamed Pentagon source confirmed that MSF had “done everything right,” in documenting the location of the hospital so it was placed on an off limits list, made up of hospitals, schools and mosques that were never to be attacked, even if there was evidence of Al Qaeda or Taliban fighters in the immediate vicinity. This was another Obama mass kill operation, and it may be relevant that the bombing in Kunduz came at a point that MSF vowed to fight to defeat Obama's signature Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, because it would deny life-saving generic drugs to half a billion poor people around the world.
With the Hillary Clinton testimony coming up, ABC News on Sunday morning aired a documentary expose of Obama, Clinton, Victoria Nuland and Ben Rhodes, for lying to the American people and covering up the Al Qaeda assault on the US compound in Benghazi, Libya on Sept. 11, 2012, where US ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other American officials were killed. The second part of the same ABC broadcast featured an interview with former Rep. Peter Hoekstra, who chaired the House Intelligence Committee, and charged that Obama had betrayed Libyan leader Qadaffi, who had become a leading ally in the war against Islamist terrorists, and that the Obama Administration had trained and armed the very terrorists who had carried out the 9/11/12 Benghazi slaughter.
The Drone Papers alone constitute a clear criminal bill of indictment against Obama that goes far beyond the “high crimes and misdemeanors” standard for impeachment. Obama's immediate removal from office is now the sanity test for the US Congress.
There is an opportunity, this week, to dump Obama and begin the process of restoring the United States to proper Constitutional rule, something that has been steadily eroded over the past 15 years of Bush and Obama. There is nothing more important to be acted upon, starting right now.
