In the late morning, Obama travels to the Department of Agriculture to meet with corporate leaders about "the benefits of the Trans-Pacific Partnership for American business and workers," says the White House schedule. The proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership -- which ranges from Canada to Chile to Australia to Japan -- reduces tariffs on various products, making them easier to sell overseas, supporters say. Obama plans to argue that U.S. agriculture will benefit in particular from the agreement. Congress must still ratify the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and critics say the free trade deal will make it easier for U.S. employers to move jobs to nations that have lower wages and fewer environmental regulations.

The biblical flooding in South Carolina is at least the sixth so-called 1-in-1,000 year rain event in the U.S. since 2010, a trend that may be linked to factors ranging from the natural, such as a strong El Niño, to the man-made, namely climate change. So many "1-in-1,000 year" rainfalls is unprecedented, said meteorologist Steve Bowen of Aon Benfield, a global reinsurance firm. "We have certainly had our fair share in the United States in recent years, and any increasing trend in these type of rainfall events is highly concerning," Bowen said. A "1-in-1,000 year event" means that there's a 1 in 1,000 (or 0.1% chance) of it happening in any given year in a given location, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said. The unrelenting heavy rainfall that soaked the Carolinas in the past week amounted to roughly 11 trillion gallons — enough to end the drought in California. The rain caused catastrophic flooding in North Carolina and South Carolina, which received 5.2 trillion gallons and 5.8 trillion gallons, respectively, according an estimate by WeatherBell meteorologist Ryan Maue. He says 11 trillion gallons would be enough to fill: 636 million swimming pools (16 x 32 feet each) - 130,370 Rose Bowls (filled to the top) It's also about one-third the volume of Lake Tahoe. And, amazingly, it's the exact amount needed to end the drought in parts of California, according to NASA calculations in December. However, getting all 11 trillion gallons in a few days wouldn't be the way to get it. [...]

BETHLEHEM, West Bank — Palestinians and Israeli soldiers clashed across the West Bank on Tuesday as the Israeli military demolished the homes of two alleged Palestinian militants amid escalating violence that is threatening to turn into a full-scale uprising in the region. Dozens of Palestinians were injured in the latest clashes as Israeli soldiers used live ammunition, stun grenades and tear gas to disperse a crowd of about 500 Palestinians who threw stones and shouted "Allahu Akbar!" (God is great), according to the Palestinian Red Crescent. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon voiced "profound alarm" Tuesday over the growing tensions. "The last few days of clashes ... are yet another worrisome sign of violence potentially spiraling out of control," he said in a statement. The protests came as the Israeli military demolished two East Jerusalem homes that the Israeli government said belonged to families of two militants — one who killed five Israelis at a Jerusalem synagogue last year, and the other who bulldozed an Israeli man to death in August. Both Palestinians were shot and killed during the attacks. Israeli troops also sealed off a room in a home of another Palestinian militant who tried to killed prominent Orthodox Jewish activist Yehuda Glick last year, the Associated Press reported. That move prompted a sharp response from the militant's brother. “If (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu thinks that this will create deterrence, then he is wrong. This will not deter anybody,” Odai Hijazi told the AP. Hijazi's brother, Motaz, shot and seriously wounded Glick, a Jewish nationalist.

Some plans, such as installing cameras, will take time. But the troops – empowered to act as they need to – must be out in force. One of the trouble spots with regard to rock throwing and similar terrorist actions has been in the vicinity of the Jewish community of Tekoa, in the Judean Desert. Terrorists are fond of throwing rocks at the cars driving on the road from Tekoa to Jerusalem (a new road, not represented on this map, that goes to the Har Homa neighborhood of Jerusalem). Of late there has been considerable difficulty in this region, with cars frequently pelted by rocks. [...]

Regardless of the denials, I believe that Obama has made it crystal clear to Israel, that she must toe the American line or lose the support of the US in the UN and who knows what else. Nothing short of such an ultimatum would have got Netanyahu to cease building in the eastern part of Jerusalem.
