FREEDOMWORKS 07/21/2015

1. Key Vote NO on Any Re-authorization of the Ex-Im Bank - by Adam Brandon
As one of our over 6.9 million FreedomWorks activists nationwide, I urge you to contact your representative and senators and ask them to vote NO on any reauthorization of the U.S. Export-Import Bank. This includes votes for the highway funding bill if Ex-Im reauthorization is attached.
The Ex-Im Bank is an 80-year-old instrument of cronyism and corporate welfare, issuing loan guarantees to huge companies and gambling with taxpayer money on politically fashionable projects such as green energy companies. On July 1st, 2015, the Bank’s charter was allowed to expire for the first time in its existence, thanks to political pressure from grassroots activists tired of government picking winners and losers in the marketplace. Read More here...

2. Senators Cruz and Paul Push for Common Core Opt-Out Surge  - by Remso Martinez
Senate Republicans and GOP presidential contenders Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky jumped in on a congressional effort to strike against Common Core by advocating on behalf of a recent House bill that would increase the opportunity for students to opt-out of Common Core based PARCC testing which has been a force of frustration and unwarranted obstacles to both parents, students, and teachers alike; while additionally criticizing a version of the Senate education bill which did not go far enough.
The two senators joined forces during a meeting originally to discuss amending to the wildly hated No Child Left Behind law, by rejecting standardized tests mandated by the George W. Bush-era law. Cruz and Paul aim at empowering students by keeping government out of the right for parents to have their students to opt-out of the mandatory testing and exams. Read more here...

3. Capitol Hill Update, 20 July 2015 - by Josh Withrow
House & Senate/Schedule: Both House and Senate are in town this week. The House will recess at the end of next week (30 July) for the long August recess, while the Senate will recess on 7 August.
Senate/Transportation: The Senate will spend much of the next week or two debating a bill to fund expiring funding for federal highway and transportation infrastructure. Although the House passed a short-term reauthorization last week, the Senate still appears to be looking to pass a longer-term bill. But the Highway Trust Fund is operating at a deficit, and it remains unclear how the Senate plans to offset that spending. A better alternative to the inefficient federal Highway Trust Fund would be to devolve highway funding to the states, as Senator Mike Lee would do in his Transportation Empowerment Act, S. 1541.  Read More here...

5. GAO report finds fake ObamaCare enrollees were able to obtain subsidies for health coverage - by Jason Pye
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report on Thursday showing that undercover consumers were allowed to re-enroll in health plans on the federal ObamaCare Exchange. The bogus enrollees had outstanding document issues that should have prevented them from obtaining subsidies for coverage.
The report is an update of preliminary results from a GAO investigation that began during the first ObamaCare open enrollment period. Eleven of the bogus consumers, some of whom used fake Social Security numbers and counterfeit citizenship documents to complete the process, were able to receive subsidies for coverage. The more recent report shows that not much has changed in the verification process, leaving open the potential for fraud. Read more here...
6. Health Insurance Companies Conspire - by Ted Abram
Obsessed with money and power, many Senators and Members of Congress often give up their political positions to lobby their old colleagues, who make our laws. For example, one-time Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) makes a huge income today by lobbying for the Motion Picture Association of America. Former Congressman Billy Tauzin (R-LA) delivered the Medicare, prescription drug bonanza for the pharmaceutical industry, where he is now a chief lobbyist. Dodd and Tauzin use their long associations with fellow pols, lobbyists and knowledge of the political process to make big salaries and bring enormous, financial increases to their clients.
The latest DC insider to cash-in is not a one-time, elected politician but a bureaucrat who organized and controlled writing the ObamaCare rules, of which the health insurance companies must comply. Marilyn Tavenner led the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and is now the CEO of America’s Health Insurance Plans. Like others before her, she will utilize her associations with pols, lobbyists and knowledge of ObamaCare rules to gain her an enormous salary and bring financial windfall to her clients – America’s Health Insurance Plans.
