TEA PARTY PATRIOTS 05/23/2015

  • Matt Bevin WINS – by just 83 votes! – in Kentucky.
Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund endorsed Matt Bevin in Kentucky’s gubernatorial race, and we’re pleased to announce that this past Tuesday, he WON the GOP primary. He received 83 votes more than James Comer, the Agriculture Commissioner. Under Kentucky election law, close vote counts do not automatically require a recount, but any candidate may request a “recanvass,” which is essentially a review of each county’s vote tallies. Comer has done so, and the recanvass will take place on May 28.
  • Hillary Clinton has another bad news week.
The Wall Street Journal reported this week that while Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State, she and her staff routinely blocked access to documents and records requested through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) – the public’s primary vehicle for gaining access to information from the government. This news fits into the larger narrative we have seen over the past three months of Clinton’s pattern of stonewalling, hiding information, and creating a culture of “non-transparency” at the State Department. From her exclusive use of a private email account to evade FOIA requests, to her secret financial arrangements with her private foundation, to this latest revelation that she and her staff blocked numerous requests for information from the public, it is clear that Hillary Clinton felt she was above the law and that the rules (about transparency and, apparently, just about everything else) simply did not apply to her or her staff. • Another Republican backs out of IA Straw Poll.
Last week we reported that Jeb Bush is skipping the August 8th Iowa Straw Poll. And the news this week is that Mike Huckabee, former Governor or Arkansas and 2008 Iowa Caucuses victor, will also skip the event in Iowa. In an op-ed in the Des Moines Register, Huckabee explained his reason for not attending this way: “It’s clear that pitting conservative candidates with limited resources against each other in a non-binding and expensive summer straw poll battle, while allowing billionaire-backed establishment candidates to sit out, will only wound and weaken the conservative candidates who best represent conservative and hard-working Iowans.” To read his full op-ed, follow this link: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/opinion/columnists/caucus/2015/05/21/mike-huckabee-focus-iowa-caucuses-iowa-straw-poll/27676649/
  • FoxNews announces debate rules, changes the way candidates compete for the nomination.
Fox News and Facebook will partner to host the first GOP debate on August 6th in Cleveland, Ohio. Fox announced that the debate will be limited to the top 10 candidates, based on national polling averages. This is far more significant than many pundits realize – in fact, it could force the biggest change in the way candidates compete for the presidential nomination in 40 years. Here is the official announcement from FoxNews: http://press.foxnews.com/2015/05/fox-news-and-facebook-partner-to-host-first-republican-presidential-primary-debate-of-2016-election/

  • #StandwithRand Filibuster on Patriot Act.
On Wednesday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) took to the Senate floor for a 10 hour and 30 minute filibuster over the Patriot Act and the NSA’s surveillance program. Steve Munisteri, who serves as a senior adviser on Sen. Paul’s presidential campaign, said of his boss: “[He] is the only Republican candidate on the forefront of protecting individual privacy.”

In case you haven’t seen the news about Tea Party Patriots’ position on the NSA surveillance program, The Hill published an article this week about the ads that TPP created in partnership with the ACLU. http://thehill.com/policy/national-security/242502-aclu-tea-party-run-anti-nsa-ads-in-dc-iowa-new-hampshire
