I
just now saw this on NHK. I may be wrong, but this is a very small
island and it would be hard to imagine anyone surviving this LEVEL 5
eruption. Level 5 is the highest possible rating for volcanic eruptions.
This is a big one, with the vertical plume spread out over a very wide
area! There is a lot of activity on the Pacific Ring of Fire these days
(a translation follows the JA text, thanks to Google Translate with
some editing by me). Don
The 29th, 10
hours ago, in the morning, an explosive eruption occurred in
Kuchinoerabujima (an island in the Kagoshima chain) in the Kagoshima
Prefecture (an island prefecture southeast of the large island of Kyushu
in Japan). The pyroclastic flow has reached the coast. The
Meteorological Agency announced the eruption warning to
Kuchinoerabujima, and raised the eruption alert level to 5. The Japan
Meteorological Agency is calling for strict vigilance as the residents
of the island must be evacuated.
