1. Capitol Hill Update, February 9, 2015 - by Josh Withrow
House & Senate/Schedule: Both chambers are in town for this week, and both will recess all of next week for Presidents’ Day.
House/Energy: On Wednesday the House will vote on S. 1, the Senate-passed bill to authorize the Keystone XL pipeline project, a bill that President Obama continues to insist that he will veto. Keystone XL has become a sort of avatar for the Obama Administration’s steadfast hostility towards energy production, so his veto threat is no surprise. Read more here...

2. Civil Asset Forfeiture: When Due Process and Property Rights Don't Count - by Michael Greibrok
On February 6 the Federalist Society held as Civil Asset Forfeiture Update on Capitol Hill with the American Civil Liberties Union and the Institute for Justice as cosponsors. The event was held to bring more awareness to the issue which has been in the news lately with Eric Holder’s limiting order (which will leave around 86% federal civil seizure unaffected), recent legislative efforts and late night television skits. The event featured a diverse panel consisting of: Darpana Sheth (IJ), Kanya Bennett (ACLU), David Smith (Smith & Zimmerman PLLC) and Bill Piper (Drug Policy Alliance). Read more here...
3. The Myth of Free Market Health Care - by Daisy Belden
Anyone who tries to tell you that the free market was the reason why nearly 15% of Americans were uninsured in 2008 is misleading you. The notion that a lack of regulations caused this disparity in coverage relies on the assumption that health insurance was a free market industry prior to the passing of the Affordable Care Act, which is simply not true. Here, I will explain just a few of the state-level health care regulations that led to 14.8% of Americans being uninsured just before the Affordable Care Act was passed. Read more here...

4. War on Energy is a War on Every American - by Ted Abram
President Obama will declare the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) off limits to oil and gas extraction. Stephen Moore, American economics writer and policy analyst, compares the amount of land being disturbed by oil and gas exploration of ANWR equivalent to a post card on a football field.
In 2010, Chip Wood at Personal Liberty revealed the Obama Administration ordered nearly half the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPRA) off-limits to development. Harmfully, the administration bureaucrats have delayed and denied exploration by Shell Oil and Conoco on their leased lands, which was approved for drilling. Read more here...
5. Debunked: Ex-Im Bank Myths - by Sam Martin

6. Enough is Enough: The Ex-Im Bank is Subsidizing Rich Australians Now by Logan Albright
The U.S. Export-Import Bank is one of the most blatant and indefensible examples of corporate cronyism by the federal government. Started 80 years ago as a protectionist, New Deal program, the Bank lingers on like a festering sore on America’s lip that just won’t heal - because Congress can’t leave it alone.
The Ex-Im Bank’s charter should have expired long ago, but Congress continues to fund it under the pretense that it is necessary to stimulate exports from American companies. In reality, the Bank hands out billions of taxpayer dollars to unsound companies based on political favoritism. Often, these companies are not even based in America. Read more here...

8. Empower Member Geraldine Lewis: Black American History for Today - by Geraldine Lewis
In view of the televised, Black atrocities in Ferguson, Missouri, Chicago, Illinois, Detroit, Michigan, and other American cities, many people might find it surprising to discover that, the greatness of today’s America has much to do with Black American achievements and inventions.
Many early American inventions were either outright created, or improved upon by Black Americans. The following are only a few of such inventions: Read more here...
