NEVADA NEWS AND VIEWS 10/18/2014

Bilbray continues to mislead voters in first debate

ERIN’S CLAIM: “Joe Heck said [social security] should be privatized and put in the hands of Wall Street gamblers.”

FACT: Joe Heck has never said Social Security should be privatized. He has said, however, that individuals should have the right to voluntarily take a portion of their Social Security withholding and invest it as they deem appropriate, which could include government-issued bonds or T-bills, not risking it on Wall Street.

This does not constitute “privatizing” Social Security, nor would it be “put in the hands of Wall Street gamblers.”

ERIN’S CLAIM: “Joe Heck has repeatedly voted for [veterans benefit] cuts.”

FACT: As a veteran himself, Joe Heck has always supported fellow veterans. While in Congress he has protected veteran benefits, worked closely with local veterans and veterans organizations, introduced pro-veteran legislation, and consistently supported Southern Nevada’s veteran community both through case work and outreach locally and legislation introduced in Washington -- he has NOT voted to cut veterans benefits.

Heck voted against the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013, which absolutely did cut veterans pensions, precisely because it cut veterans pensions. Meanwhile, Erin Bilbray-Kohn supported this bill publicly and released a statement on her website criticizing Joe Heck for his “decision to join extremist Republicans in voting against the bipartisan budget measure,” and accusing Heck of voting “against the needs of his constituents.”

Heck also voted “no” on an amendment with a perceived partial fix to the veterans benefit cuts enacted as part of the Bipartisan Budget Act which, according to the American Legion, constituted a “compromise that still penalizes some military service members and future retirees.

Joe Heck voted against the original benefit cuts, and against the amendment which failed to fully restore the benefit cuts - the latter of which earned him a thank you letter from the American Legion.

ERIN’S CLAIM: “Joe feels his son should get paid more than my daughters.”

FACT: This claim is absolutely offensive and untrue. Joe Heck also has two daughters, and he continues to believe that men and women should receive equal pay for equal work.

ERIN’S CLAIM:  “Joe has voted to cut Planned Parenthood and would even criminalize abortion in cases of rape and incest.”

Congressman Heck’s position on this issue is clear and consistent. He is pro-life and does not support federal funds being used to provide abortion services, except in the case of rape, incest, or the life of the mother.

ERIN’S CLAIM:  “Joe has voted repeatedly to shut down the government.”

FACT: Simply put, there was never a vote to “shut down the government” - and to mislead voters by claiming otherwise is reprehensible. Joe Heck voted for every bill that came to the House floor to fund the government and keep the government open - as well as other bills to fund essential services. It was the Senate that refused to act on any of the bills passed by the House of Representatives, which led to the partial shutdown.

ERIN’S CLAIM: “Congress needs someone like me that would do what they say here in Nevada and do the same thing in Washington DC, not like Joe who says one thing in Nevada and votes a different way inside the beltway.”

FACT: There is no evidence, despite the wild - and false - accusations of a desperate candidate, that point to Dr. Joe Heck being anything but an honest, hard-working legislator that consistently fights for the men, women, and families of Southern Nevada in Washington.

ERIN’S CLAIM: Joe Heck voted “to give tax breaks to corporations that moved jobs overseas.”

FACT: Joe Heck has never voted to give tax breaks to corporations that moved jobs overseas. This is a misrepresentation of the facts, and of this issue. Joe Heck has repeatedly stated that raising taxes during a recession would do damage to an already fragile economy, and now Bilbray-Kohn is using his refusal to support President Obama’s tax increases as a justification for this claim. It is simply not true.

ERIN’S CLAIM: “The only votes you’ve made on [immigration] is to deport DREAMers.”

FACT: Once again, Bilbray-Kohn is manufacturing votes that never took place. Joe Heck has voted to allow DREAMers to stay in this country - in the most recent DACA vote. He has been on record, and in fact has tried to draft legislation that included the activist community to try to give DREAMers the opportunity to stay in the U.S. After they provided their input and helped draft the bill, they refused to support it and backed out, putting politics ahead of policy - and people.

ERIN’S CLAIM: “DREAMers protest in his office and he has them arrested.”

FACT: It has been widely reported in the local media that no one was arrested during the protest in question. That was a planned protest where they came, and called the police department to say they were going to show up and that they were expecting to be arrested. They were not arrested. They were cited after they tried to storm Heck’s district office and would not leave when requested to do so. The protesters themselves said they were going to be there and wanted Metro to respond.
