SILVER STATE CONFIDENTIAL 09/03/2014

THE END OF RALSTON REPORTS?

The clock could soon begin ticking for liberal propagandists Jon Ralston, Hugh Jackson and Rory Reid at NBC’s television affiliate in Las Vegas.

It was announced today that KSNV is being acquired by Sinclair Broadcast Group, one of the largest broadcasting companies in the country, subject to regulatory approvals.  And here’s where things could get interesting…

While late KSNV owner Jim Rogers was an unabashed liberal who unapologetically favored liberal-leaning local content, Sinclair has a decidedly conservative philosophical bone in its corporate body.

Indeed, Mark Hyman, Vice President of Corporate Relations, spoke at our first Conservative Leadership Conference in 2007 and has been a regular attendee at Grover Norquist’s weekly “rightwing conspiracy” meeting in Washington, DC for years.

Hyman also produces regular “Behind the Scenes” news commentaries aired by Sinclair, many of which have a decidedly conservative bent - like the one from last week on ObamaCare’s costs that concluded, “ObamaCare.  It's not good for business. Or people. Or America.”

Now, if Ralston Reports was a ratings gold mine, I’d expect Sinclair to keep it on the air.  But as I’ve reported here from time-to-time over the past year or so, almost nobody watches the show other than gypsies, tramps and thieves.

Ditto goes for smarmy liberal opinion commentator Jackson, whose horribly boring afternoon chatfest on KSNV was cancelled months ago, and boring-as-paint-drying liberal opinion commentator Reid, who appears to be using Jackson’s replacement show simply to keep his name out there for a possible U.S. senate run if/when his dad decides to call it quits.

No, such changes won’t happen anytime soon.  But if Sinclair is, in fact, approved for the purchase of KSNV, the writing could well be on the corporate wall.  Looks like Jon Boy might have to step up his pathetic panting for a gig on MSNBC a notch!

BILBRAY-KOHN STILL DISHING UP WHOPPERS

Rep. Joe Heck’s (R-Nevada) campaign sent out an email yesterday.  It outlines two claims Dr. Heck’s Democrat opponent, Erin Bilbray-Kohn, continues to peddle on the campaign trail; that he “voted for legislation that requires seniors to begin paying back student loans while still in school” and “voted for legislation that would increase out-of-pocket Medicare costs to those turning 57 this year by 50%.”

Both claims are absolutely false.  And Bilbray-Kohn conveniently never cites a specific bill that Dr. Heck supposedly voted for when she makes them.

Why can’t Erin take Vice President Joe Biden’s advice and just, you know, tell the truth?

Speaking of which, Erin sent out an email on Monday that claimed she was “still on track to beat Joe Heck in November.”

Another whopper. The Bilbray-Kohn campaign wreck jumped the track long ago.

SETTING A LOW AND INVISIBLE BAR

What is it with campaigns treating their donors like idiots?

It’s bad enough that Democrat congressional candidate Erin Bilbray-Kohn’s camp has been breathlessly emailing its supporters asking for money to reach undefined fundraising “goals” for the past year, but now Republican lieutenant governor candidate Mark Hutchison is pulling the same stunt?

“I wanted to drop you a quick note and make sure you knew about our important fundraising deadline tomorrow at midnight,” Hutch wrote in an email last Saturday.  “I know you’re busy with family and friends, but we only have $535 to go.”

To go where?  What exactly is the fundraising goal?  Is it $5,000?  Is it $10,000?  Is it $25,000?

Is it $536?

Hutch doesn’t say, thus ensuring no one knows the goal so no one really knows for sure if he reaches it or not, even though he will surely claim “We did it!”

And people wonder why people don’t trust anything that comes out of any candidate’s mouth?

MUTH’S TRUTHS

--> So I was watching my 7-year-old son playing a pickup soccer game here at Campland on the Bay over the weekend.  A little 6-year-old girl was in the game, as well, and came running over to her parents, also seated on the sidelines, for some water.

That’s when I noticed that both of the kid’s parents weren’t watching their daughter play, but had their heads buried in their smart-phones.  That’s just sad.

--> The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Democrat State Sen. Tick Segerblom intends to introduce legislation next year to raise the entry-level starter wage in Nevada to $15 per hour.  Which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

If the good senator really wants to help poor people, why not raise the entry-level starter wage to $150 an hour?

--> Keeping taxes low isn’t about creating jobs; it’s about limiting the size and scope of government.  Every increase in taxes results in an increase in government.  And that’s bad for children and other living things.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“The demand for self-reliance at Burning Man toughens everyone up. There are few fools, and no malingerers. People give of themselves – small gifts like lip balm or tiny flashlights. I brought Cuban cigars. Edgy, but not as exciting as some ‘gifts’ that would have interested the federal authorities.” – Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform on his trip to the annual Burning Man festival in Nevada last week
